ln April 1857 the 'Fitzjames' arrived in New South Wales bringing poor lrish immigrants Patrick Casey and Mary Kennedy from Templemore, County Tipperary.

Patrick worked as a shepherd around the Monaro district. He married Mary and they eventually had land and stock of their own but Patrick's fights and drunkenness found him in court on more than one occasion. Patrick and Mary had 11 children, the youngest, a daughter, Winifred born at Jillamatong, near Jindabyne on 27 March 1873.

Winifred had a hard early life. She left home in ill-fitting hob-nailed boots, handed down through her siblings, to work as a house servant in Kiandra. Her first pay was spent on a pair of decent shoes.

Winifred married Robert Harris on 15 June 1893 but marriage to a Protestant meant estrangement from her Catholic family. Robert, the son of Henry and Harriet Harris, was born in Sydney on 6 June 1859 and came as a baby to Kiandra with his parents in 1860.

ln 1894 their first child Florence (Florrie) was born and Amelia (Millie) followed in 1896. Winifred was pregnant again when Robert cut his hand while butchering. lt became infected but amputation of the arm failed to save him from deadly gangrene and he died on 30 March 1898 and is buried in the Kiandra cemetery. His son, Robert, was born five months later on 28 August 1898.

ln 1891 Robert and his brother Oliver had purchased the Kiandra store from Thomas Causley and Winifred stayed on to run the store where she sold clothes, hardware, household goods, stockfeed, tackle, meat, groceries and haberdashery. Orders were freighted out to miners and outlying properties. ln 1899 she and Oliver obtained a licence and built the Alpine Hotel.

ln December 1900 Winifred married George lrwin, the Kiandra schoolmaster and close friend of the Harris brothers. The first children were twins but sadly lda died at 6 months then Arthur fell mortally ill with pneumonia. The Doctor from Adaminaby was called but he gave no hope. Not to be beaten the decision was made to take him to Sydney. Arthur was wrapped up warmly and carried by his father on skis with Winifred and the other children, also on skis, travelling through deep snow to the Cooma coach. They went on by train to Sydney where Arthur miraculously survived.

Four more children, Madge, Fred, Dudley and Noel were born at Kiandra. After giving birth Winifred had a bowl of gruel and returned to work. The annual ski carnival with a town full of notables, including A B (Banjo) Patterson, meant no break from the store for Millie's birth and when Noel arrived on Christmas Day Winifred still cooked the family Christmas dinner.

Winifred was rarely sick apart from suffering headaches which were treated with a damp cloth and a short rest. The family were healthy and had few accidents except when Dudley broke his nose and George had to straighten it. The family home at the store had three bedrooms, one bed for the boys, one bed for the girls, and George and Winifred's room with baby bassinet and toddler's cot. Saturday was bath day and they took turns in front of the fire, after which the boys were given a penny to spend in the store. Each year a seamstress stayed with the family to sew new clothes.

ln 1908 George lrwin bought out Oliver Harris's share in the store and hotel. George mainly managed the hotel. Winifred ran the store, cared for the household and children and helped at the hotel when required. Although Winifred sometimes had employees and later had help from older children, her workload was heavy and unrelenting.

ln winter Kiandra was often snowed-in for up to 3 months. Washdays were harsh, trudging through snow with feet wrapped in flannel strips inside gumboots. River water was carried up the hill by wagon in barrels then bucketed to boil in a copper over a fire. The hotel linen was washed, rinsed, starched and hung to dry. lt often froze on the lines and had to be dried in front of the fires at the store and hotel and then ironed with a flat iron.

Florrie Harris preferred work in the hotel. She took a course in cooking and produced fine pastries. Winifred bottled fruit and cooked stews, dumplings and bread. Yeast was cultured from potato peelings. Potatoes were buried in the cellar's earth floor but in winter the ground would often freeze, making it difficult to dig them out. Cows and goats were milked daily. Cheese, butter, jams and meat for the hotel and butchery came from Glory Hole.

George was Snowshoe Club secretary. The children would ski but Winifred, busy with the store and hotel had no time for sport or a social life. The Tumut to Cooma coach ran through Kiandra with winter sports enthusiasts and summer visitors enjoying the mountain air, horse races, picnics, cricket matches or trout fishing.

George and Winifred kept close links with the Harris family at Glory Hole with regular trips on horseback when time permitted. The boys swam in the thermal pool while the women prepared food. There were dances at Caves House. At Kiandra they had a piano in the home and George owned the Kiandra dance hall. A West lndian called Black Christy played the fiddle. The travelling picture show also provided a rare treat.

Winifred was 41 when she had the last of her 10 children, Cyril, born in Tumut in 1914. By then Kiandra's population had dwindled and George decided Sydney offered a better future for his large family. ln 1915 they sold the store to George Yan and the hotel to Jacob Wilson. They moved to Canterbury and George became a real estate agent.

Winifred cared for the children as they continued their education. ln 1924 her son Robert Harris drowned attempting to rescue three swimmers in the surf at Ballina.

Sons, Arthur and Noel, became bank managers, Dudley became managing director for Wrigley's Chewing Gum in New Zealand and Cyril was a talented sportsman, a wartime navigator and later a land valuer. Fred disappeared. The family believe he was a wartime casualty, falsifying his name and age to enlist. Florrie, Millie and Madge married and had families of their own.

In later years Winifred noticed a sore that would not heal and at first did not realise it was breast cancer. A mastectomy was to no avail and she died aged 59 on 7 July 1932 at Canterbury. Winifred is buried at Rookwood cemetery in Sydney.

Winifred is always remembered with great love and admiration. The bonds she established continue in friendships maintained across the many branches of her family between grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
