The Death of Mrs. Luff
A Link with the Past

All of her friends, and they are legion, will hear of the announcement of the death of Mrs. Luff, of Gobarralong, on Friday last, with the most profound regret. The deceased lady has been prostrated on a sick bed for a lengthened period, and has been in a critical condition during the last 3 months. That dreadful melody of the 19th century, cancer, was the immediate cause of death, but, all that the highest medical skill could effect, combined with loving care and devoted nursing, was done to soften this most painful path to the grave. With perhaps the single exception of Mrs. Hanle, of Mingay, Mrs. Luff was the oldest resident on the (?) River.

Away far back in the thirties, the Luffs, Crowes and Carberrys settled down in the fertile valley of Gobarralong, and no better known or more highly respected families exist between Gondagai and Yass to day. Mrs. Luff was one of the few remaining links between the present and the past, connecting the courageous band of hardy pioneers, who, following closely in the footsteps of the of intrepid Hamilton H, reclaimed the wilderness from the fierce and hostile natives, with their more fortunate descendants who reap the fruits of their daring enterprise to day.

The deceased lady left a large family of descendants, numbering at least 100, to mourn her loss, comprising of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, settled in different parts of the electorate. The funeral took place on Sunday last, and was one of the largest ever seen in the district--troops of friends and relatives hastening from all points to pay their last sad tokens of respect to their dearly beloved old friend. The Rev. Father Ryan performed the last solemn rites of of the R.C. Church, amid irrepressible sobs and lamentations, in the little cemetery at Coolac, where the remains of the good neighbor, a kind and staunch friend, and a devoted, loving, mother found their last resting place on this earth.
