Personal Notes:
CHARLES BARNARD, brother of George William

Charles arrived with his wife in Van Diemen’s Land from England by the brig ‘Caledonia’ on November 9th 1822, bringing with him a letter of recommendation, as an intending settler, from the Colonial Office and dated 3rd October 1821. He received a grant of 1,000 acres in 1823 on the River Tamar which he called Rougemont, later known as Red Hill. He received the Title Deed for the property in 1826.

By a correspondence file in the Chief Secretary’s Department, he seems to have been impatient at the delay which occurred in procuring convict labour for the development of his land, doubtless due to the fact that the supply was small and public buildings, previously erected, were being enlarged and rebuilt and few could be spared for the country districts.

For this or some other reason, he decided to return to England, leaving his brother as agent for his land. He sailed from Hobart Town on 23rd September, 1827 for England per S. ‘Admiral Cockburn’ accompanied by his wife.

Charles sold his land grant to his brother George probably on his departure. An advertisement in the Hobart Town Courier of 17th June offers for sale 1050 acres ‘a grant of land to Charles Barnard, now owned by G.W. Barnard’ in the same county as Red Hill, now known as Wareham.
