JAMES ORME BARNARD was baptised 16 Sep 1835 in St Marys, Lambeth, Surrey, one of a family of 8 children born to John Barnard (1790 - 1864), a wealthy timber merchant and "landed proprietor" of Lambeth, London and his mother Harriett nee Passingham (1796 - 1846)

1859 James Barnard, a paying passenger, boarded the ship, Harwood 500 tons, under the command of Captain Forsyth, and sailed from Plymouth on 11th August, and arrived at Auckland, NZ on the 3rd November, a passage in 95 days port to port. She left Plymouth with 48 passengers - a steerage passenger died on the voyage.

1862 an Architect, James went into partnership with George Frederick Allen of Auckland. MESSRS. BARNARD AND ALLEN, ARCHITECTS AND SURVEYORS, QUEEN STREET (OVER MR. SMALLFIELD'S).

In 1862 the partners won a competition for the design of St Mathews Church and afterwards, they were offered appointments in the Wellington Province, as District Surveyors, by the Prime Minister, Mr William Fox. Said Allen "We had worked 16 hours a day and had earned, in the six months of our partnership, ?350. We were loath to leave Auckland, but with certainty of salary, they accepted."

James married CAROLINE ELIZABETH* BARBER 11 Jun 1864 in St Matthews Church, Auckland, daughter of J A BARBER. She was born 1840, and died 08 Sep 1913 in Devonport, Auckland.

Hokianga Map 1862 The Hokianga map was mapped by George Frederic Allen and James Orme Barnard, architectual parners of Wellington in 1862 at the request of John White.

MR. BARNARD having just resigned his appointment as District Surveyor under the Provincial Government of Wellington, begs to inform gentlemen that he (in partnership with Mr. Allen) will resume the practice of an Architect and Surveyor at the above address.

In November, Allen was transferred to Wanganui and Barnard to Waiararapa but in 1869, on the Wanganui Roll has a Leasehold; Section No. 37, Hill Street, Wanganui

1874 map sections for sale Mt Eden, Auckland In 1877 was appointed Inspector of Surveys in charge of the Poverty Bay and East Coast Districts (New Zealand Gazette, 1st. June, 1877) which were then directed from Hawkes Bay. Appointed Inspector of Surveys and he carried out much of the triangulation of the rugged hinterland of Gisborne and the East Coast. Authorised to survey under the Land Transfer Act.

1882 - Poverty Bay Herald, 29 November 1882, Engineer's Report. It was recommended that plans be submitted for the extension, of the wharves, and notifying that it conjunction with the district surveyor, Mr. J. O. Barnard, that the boundaries of the foreshore had been pegged out in order to facilitate the issue of the Crown grant.

1894 - Poverty Bay Herald, 8 September 1894: ASBESTOS PAINTS, JOINTS, PACKINGS COVERINGS, Etc. THE FIRE RISK DEFIED. MR J. O. BARNARD has been appointed Agent for Gisborne and surrounding districts, for the Asbestus Fire Proof Paint Company. After a severe tests and practical experiments Agents throughout the world, the goods made by the Company have proved a thorough success in resisting fire.

The Barnard family up to 1895 lived at Gladstone Road, Gisborne then they moved to New Brighton, Chistchurch where James was Secretary for Underwriters 170 Hereford Street, Christchurch and became a member of the Canterbury Chess Club.

1902 lived at 38 Gloucester St, Linwood, as an architect, and it was announced in the Star - 6 August 1902, that "Mr J. O. Barnard, secretary of the Canterbury Fire Underwriters' Association, who intends making a holiday trip, to England, was, at a meeting of the Association, presented by the members with a copy of a complimentary resolution and a purse of sovereigns. Mr Barnard has filled the office of Secretary to the Association for the last four years, and the members spoke in the highest terms of the. manner in which he had fulfilled his many duties."

Caroline Barnard died death: 8 Feb 1913 aged 73 Years and was buried 9 Feb 1913 at O'Neill's Point Cemetery and a month later James Orme BARNARD died 19 Mar 1913 aged 77 years at Auckland and was buried at O'Neill's Point Cem. Row A Plot 130.

1. ARTHUR JOHN BARNARD was born 22 May 1865 in Auckland, and died 20 Nov 1943 in Gisborne aged 78Y where he is buried at the Taruheru Cemetery, Gisborne E04.10. He married PAULINE LEZARD 29 Oct 1904 in Church of Holy Trinity, Avonside, daughter of CHARLES LEZARD and ROSINA SCHWARTZ. She was born Abt. 1879, and died 31 May 1951 aged 71yrs in Hastings Cemetery.

1914 - Ashburton Guardian, 4 March 1914, Yesterday afternoon Mr A. J. Barnard, who has occupied the position of teller at the Ashburton branch of the Union Bank of Australia for the past nine years, and who, with his wife and family, is about to take a trip to England, was the recipient of a purse of soverings from a number of intimate friends. Mr T. A. C. Pearce presided over the gathering, and the presentation was made by Mr John Hampton, who wished Mr and Mrs Barnard a pleasant trip. Mr Barnard suitably acknowledged the gift. Earlier in the week Mr Barnard was presented with a pipe by the staff of the Bank.

1914 - Ashburton Guardian, The Barnards were staying with relatives in London and will be in England till the beginning of July, when they are,to sail by the Orvieto on their return voyage returning to Ashburton after a six-months' trip to England.
