Aged 88 Years
Married James McGrath in 1863 at Tumut Married Edward Cussen in at Tumut with 2 children born of this union. Adelong and Tumut Express and Tumbarumba Post (NSW : 1900 - 1925) Fri 1 Jun 1923 THE LATE MRS CUSSEN. Yet another old identity of the Tumut district went, to that bourne whence no traveller returns, when Mrs. Cussen, widow of the late Edward Cussen, succumbed after being bedridden for the past nine years through having her hip fractured in a fall. During those long dreary years she was tenderly nursed and cared for by her daughter, Miss McGrath, and received priestly ministrations from Very Rev. Fr. J. Sharkey, Rev. Frs. Devine and Kinane. She had reached the advanced age of 88 years. The late Mrs. Cussen was a native of County Clare, Ireland, and came to Australia about 60 years ago, and made her home at Tumut. She married the late James McGrath, and the couple resided at Gadara, where four daughters were born, viz, Miss Margaret McGrath (Tumut) and Mrs. Malone (Tumut Plains), Miss Mary and Miss Bridget (deceased). The husband died some nine or ten years later, and the widow moved to Gocup, where eventually she married Mr. Edward Cussen. As the result of this union there were two sons,Peter and James (both deceased). Mr. Cussen also predeceased her, and the twice widowed lady lived in the cottage at Tumut until her death. She leaves eighteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The funeral took place on Friday last, the remains being interred in the R.C. portion of the old cemetery, Rev. Frs. Sharkey and Kinane reading the burial service. |
