Aged 62 Years
Son of James and Mary On Tuesday morning last there passed away from earth, one of our oldest residents in the person of Mr. James Howe, the cause of death being inflamation of the bowel. Mr. M. Mclnerney drove him down to Gundagai on Monday as a witness to his poor fellow became so ill there he was unable to appear. He got worse on his way home, and was brought to his sister's (Mrs. Cussen) in Russell street. Dr. Mason was called in and did what he could for the sufferer, but the case had gone too far, and the poor fellow, lingering till a little after six on Tuesday morning, went to that bourne from whence no traveller returns. Deceased was quite a young man when he came to the colony about 40 years ago, and must have been nearly 60 years of age. Always enterprising he purchased a block of land on the Gilmore, which led to so much litigation in respect of the title to it that it cost him nearly £1000, and he finally lost it. Notwithstanding his exceedingly heavy reverses, he was one of the most honest men we ever came in contact with. Little by little meeting all his obligations like a man. He was the true sole of honour, and many will miss the face that for two decades was to be seen in Tumut. He continued to his death to carry on farming pursuits, and was latterly and for many years previous n tenant, of Mrs. Cooke's, at Petfield. His sudden death came as a great shock to his many relatives here, although the- ups and downs of life had, latterly enfeebled his constitution. He always bad a cheerful word for his friends, and was highly respected in the community. His death cast quite a gloom over the town, on the morning of St. Patrick's day the patron saint of the country that gave him birth, and that he loved so well. Alas! poor 'Jim.' His trials now are over, and he died an ornament to the land of his adoption in all respects, a truly a truly honest man. |
