Personal Notes:
1851 living with uncle George Elworthy at 46 High Street Exeter. Ellen came to Australia in 1853 on the ship Mooltan, with her sister Asenath and cousins Elizabeth and Eliza, disembarking at Geelong.

The eldest daughter of James Elworthy Jm and Bessie MORSE was baptised at St Sidwell, Exeter on 23 Feb 1826. Not a lot was happening in England but in Australia things were going on apace. By Letters Patent, the Anglican Church was given the status of an established religion, controlling education; the first street lamp was lit; a Pitt Street shopkeeper installed gas lighting in his premises; a Chamber of Commerce was formed. From 01 Jan keeping records of births, deaths and marriages was required - making things easier for future family historians!

Ellen's father James had died just two days after her 6th birthday. At the time of the 1851 Census, she was living with her uncle George Elworthy and family at 46 High Street. It is quite possible she had been with them for some time as her aunt Emma was in poor health (rumoured to have had a breakdown after the birth of her last child in 1845). Ellen's management of the household and particularly her help with the younger children would have been invaluable.

When the time came for the family to move "Down Under" it made sense for Ellen and her sister to go along to help care for the little ones in the new land. Alice was not quite eight, Charles only nine, Isabella 11 and Emma 12.

Why the whole family did not travel together is a bit of a mystery but Ellen and her sister Asenath accompanied George's daughters Elizabeth, nearly 18 and Eliza 14 on the Mooltan, a ship of 610 tons which sailed from Southampton on 23 April 1853 under the direction of Captain Chivas.

The girls disembarked at Geelong on 02 Aug after a voyage lasting 115 days and according to the passenger list "went to friends". Apparently they didn't stay long in Victoria and made their way up to Sydney. The best laid plans don't always come to fruition and any possible ideas of caring for the children went by the board four months after their arrival in Sydney.

One family legend says Ellen met Richard Morgan JONES on the ship coming out, although they may have met in Sydney soon after. In any case, they were wed at the Independent Chapel in Pitt Street on 15 Dec 1853. The witnesses were her Uncle George and Sigmond HOFFNUNG, a merchant who may have employed Richard.

At that time the 7-year-old Congregational Church (to give it the correct title) was considered the most handsome building in the Colony. At a cost of 6000 pounds, it was built by public contribution as it was against Church principles to accept any form of Government assistance either for church building or for the maintenance of its ministers.

Ellen's address is shown as Pitt Street (where George had opened his first shop) but no other detail is given for Richard except that he was an assistant draper.

One of his great-grand-daughters told me that Richard was working at Guy's Hospital in London but was less interested in medicine than in teaching himself Sanskrit. She also said he migrated to manage David Jones store in Barrack Street (surname was a coincidence) and they lived above the shop, where one daughter reputedly was born. This would have been (Ellen) Annie who arrived in the year following her parent's marriage.

At St Andrew's Cathedral on 16 ApI 1878 Annie wed George Sackville Sinclair WEMYSS, gentleman, from Caithness, Scotland. He was the son of David Sinclair Wemyss, a Captain in the 92nd Highlanders and Elizabeth nee SUTHERLAND. One informant said Annie rejected his proposal, he returned to Scotland then came back, was accepted the second time - and both returned to his family home. I've not found anything more on this line.
