Daughter of Catherine and James Lovell
The Land 17 Oct 1952 DEATH OF TWO WOMEN PIONEERS TWO 85-year-old women members of pioneering New South Wales families died this week. They are Mesdames Elizabeth Anne Barry and Elizabeth Wilson. Mrs. Barry, who died at Berridale was the daughter of Mr. James Lovell, a pioneer of Pambula, on the For South Coast. Mrs, Barry is the widow of the late Mr. George Barry, of Barrymore, Moonbah, Western Monaro. She was born at Pambula, and joined the teaching service at the age of 20. She was transferred to Moonbah to take charge of 38 pupils. The journey took seven days by coach, buggy and horse and included the crossing of flooded creeks rivers. One Saturday of each month, she had to walk 10 miles to Jindabyne to post the school fees and collect the mail for the settlement. Annual Visit She married Mr. Barry in 1888, did much charitable work for the settlement, and contributed historical articles to journals and newspapers. She paid an annual visit to Pambula. Mr. Barry was councillor of the Snowy River Shire from 1907 to his death in 1917. One son, Vincent, also gave public service. Another son, Leo, has been a councillor for 18 years, and president for 13 years. |
