Personal Notes:
The Catholic Press 16 Aug 1917
Death of Mr. George Barry, OF MOONBAH, MONARO. Monaro mourned on Friday last when it learned the sad news of Mr. Barry's very sudden death, while taking part as a councillor in a meeting of the Dalgety Shire Council at Berridale. Mr. Barry and his family and friends knew that his end might be expected at any time, although he was still leading an active, almost an energetic, life; but his popularity was such that never before in Monaro has a death caused such widespread sympathy and regret. Very Rev. Father J. J. Norris, P.P., V.F., hurried out in a car from Cooma, and administered all the consolations of the Church, and he also celebrated a Requiem Mass in Berridale 's new church on Saturday morning, and again in Moonbah church on Monday. Representatives from Cooma and all Monaro were present at the funeral, which took place in Moonbah Cemetery, on Sunday afternoon, about four hundred people being present. Master Vincent Thompson led the funeral procession, carrying the crucifix, and followed by the girls and boys of the congregation, marching two by two, and marshalled by Miss Faith Barry; then followed Very Rev. Father Norris, in front, of the coffin, which was carried by friends of the family, and had as a body guard the Moonbah church committee. Following the church committee were Mrs. Barry and her family, 'and the relatives; councillors and ex-councillors of the Dalgety Shire Council (some of whom travelled over 50 miles), and the general public of all denominations. After the prayers, Very Rev. Father Norris gave a short and impressive address, of fering sympathy to Mrs. Barry and the relatives, and stating; that though now dead George Barry would still live in the memory of the people, on account of his pious and exemplary life, his active interest in public affairs, and his great love for his native land, and for the land of his fathers (Ireland); also on account of his charity and benevolence and his devotion to his Church, and to his priests. All were asked to re member him in their prayers. The late Mr. George Barry was the second youngest of the well-known family of Barry Bros., of Monaro. They owned the famous Moonbah cattle station, whose stock always brought top prices in the Bairnsdale markets. Some years ago the station was divided, and 'Barrymore' portion was taken by the deceased. He delighted in maintaining the high standard of cattle for which Moonbah was famous. He was an authority concerning all matters relating to his district, a fluent and incisive speaker, and a well-known figure at all social and official functions on Monaro. He was a total abstainer. and a monthly communicant all his life, which shone with good deeds, and is written, as the Very Rev. Father Norris said at the graveside, in letters of gold, which all may easily read on the landscape of his native, Moonbah. He was 57 years of age, and leaves a widow, two sons and three daughters (one of whom is married to Mr. Leslie Sturgeon, of Kara Station, Berridale), to mourn their loss. — R.I.P

Freeman’s Journal 23 Aug 1917
COUNCILLOR GEORGE BARRY. MOONBAH. Councillor George Barry, of "Barrymore," Moonbah, died suddenly while addressing a meeting at Berridale on August 10th, leav ing a wife, two sons and three daughters, viz., Mr. Lovell Barry, of Moonbah, and Leo, a student at Holy Cross College, Ryde, and Mrs. Leslie Sturgeon, of 'Kara,' Berri dale, and Misses Annie and Eileen Barry. An aged mother, three brothers and three sisters also deeply mourn their loss, which is one the whole district feel keenly. Mr. Barry was born at Moonbah in I860, and was married in Pumbula in 1889 to Miss Bessie Lovell, and since then their home at Barrymore has always been the home of the priests, and the name of Barry has been a household word on Monaro for charity, kindness and hospitality for almost a cen tury, and deceased was always looked upon as one of the best. 'Truest friend and noblest foe,' he died at his post. During his life he took a most active interest in all Catholic and Irish affairs, and by his death the Church is a loser, and Ireland has lost one of her staunchest supporters, the district poor have lost their best friend. He was al ways leader in all patriotic and charitable movements — almost his last act was to for ward a cheque for France's Day Fund. His sudden death cast quite a gloom over the whole of the Monaro district, and general sympathy for the bereaved family is felt by every resident both far and near. He was, in fact, one in a thousand, and numerous priests throughout Australia can testify to his goodness, and will not forget him when celebrating Holy Mass. He has been a sub scriber to the good old 'Freeman' since his boyhood, and always looked for its arrival as one would a very welcome visitor. George Barry was fourth son of the Late John Barry. His mother, who survives him, has lived in his house for some years. His grandparents, the late William Barry, and his wife, Lady Clare, hailed from Cork, and with greatest of pride Mr. George Barry would claim to be a descendant of the Barrys of Cork, and proud to belong to Ireland, and doubly so as his wife's mother was a Doherty from County Clare. He was very proud, of and attached, to his family and home, and never could there be a better or fonder husband and father. May he now enjoy the crown ing reward such a life as his deserves, for they are far too few. The remains were taken from Berridale immediately after Mass was celebrated by the Very Rev. Father J. J. Norris,. P.P., V.F., on Saturday to St. Thomas' Church, Moonbah, and after Mass on Sunday were laid to rest in the family square in Moonbah cemetery, the funeral being very largely at tended by residents of Cooma, Berridale, Adaminaby, Moonbah, Dalgety, Boloco, and Jindabyne, and elsewhere. Rev. Father Nor ris, who was greatly affected, performed the last rites of Holy Church at the graveside. — R.I.P.
