| - Notes: Henry's younger brother William 1820 apparently caused father Thomas some
heartache. Originally Thomas bequeathed 1500 pounds to William when he reached 25 years but a codicil stated William should not have the money until he was 28. However, if needed, the trustees could withdraw 700 pounds to set him up in business. The reason for the codicil is not clear as it was made less than a year before William's 25th birthday. In Thorverton lived an agricultural labourer with three (presumably beautiful) daughters, each of whom made marriages which were unusual at a time when class distinction was taken very seriously indeed. One girl wed an old Harrovian barrister and became the lady of a nearby manor; another wed a Swedish businessman. The youngest daughter Elizabeth married our William on 29 Mar 1848, just seven months before he received his inheritance. At least Elizabeth was more fortunate than most of her contemporaries and spared a baby-every-year syndrome. She and William had three daughters Mary 1849, Emma 1852, Alice 1861 as well as a son Henry Townsend in 1857. |
