Personal Notes:
Henry farmed almost all his life in Upton Pyne at Stevenstone Barton owned by
Sir Stafford Northcote. He inherited the farm leasehold from his father, only
retiring from its active management about ten years before his death at Bramford
Speke on 03 May 1889. Henry also owned properties called Langford Barton and
Snake Ash in the parish of Newton St Cyres. The name "Barton" usually implies
the best farm in the district.
A keen huntsman, Henry Cann Townsend was the genial and hospitable Master
of the Pyne Harriers. His obituary says he was one of the best known
agriculturalists in the county - and also the largest cider merchant! In his younger
days he held a commission in the Devon Yeomanry Cavalry and distinguished
himself with a deal of proficiency as a swordsman!

There is a link with Australia and the owners of the land the Townsends farmed.
Sir Stafford Northcote (1818-1887) became private secretary to Prime Minister
Gladstone, was Chancellor of the Exchequer. After Disraeli's death he became joint
leader of the Conservative Party. In 1885 he was created 1st Earl of Iddesleigh.
His son became the first Lord Northcote and in 1900 was appointed Governor of
Bombay where he 'laboured for the good of the people'. From 21 Jan 1904 until 09
Sep 1908 he was Governor General of Australia, working diligently to improve
finances and administration. During his term of office it is said that he visited
every factory in Sydney and Melbourne.
Both he and his father share the Upton Pyne burial ground with various
ancestors of the Townsend and Bowcher lines.
The Northcote family home was called 'Pynes' and designed by Inigo Jones, the
famous architect who designed the Queen's House at Greenwich and also laid out
Covent Garden. It contains a very fine picture collection and a 'treasured' marble
table - at which a man gambled away the manor of Kennerleigh!
