- Notes: Searching for Edward's will it was revealed that at some unknown date he had
married his first cousin, Matilda Snell, daughter of his mother's sister Mary nee
Townsend and Samuel Snell. Edward left his house and 200 pounds to his dear
wife Matilda, 150 pounds to his brother Frederick James Bowcher (the one I
couldn't find) and legacies to his half-sister Ann and her daughter, his half-brother
John's son and to a niece. To his brother William he left 8/- a week during
Matilda's life AND a bequest to his nephew James Elworthy in Australia! Much
family data was gained from the surnames in this will.
Matilda, baptised at Exeter on 09 Jul 1806, lived to be eighty. She left the house
and 'all appurtenances' to her niece Eliza Jane DREW on condition that Matilda's
younger brother Samuel, a tailor from Kenton, be paid five shillings per week
every week of his life, rental for an apartment or cottage 'befitting his station in life'
and payment of his grocer's and medical bills.
Eliza Ann bap 04 Dec 1808 at St Stephen wed Thomas TOBY, also a spirit
merchant, on 27 Jun 1835 at St David's in Exeter. Charles Henry was baptised the
same day as Eliza but it is not safe presuming siblings are twins because they share
a baptismal date. Because of the short time between their baptism and Edward's, in
this case I think they were. Charles was only 18 when he died on 19 July 1826.

- Notes: Edward Bowcher 17 Jun 1807 was 21 when his father died and his mother
Elizabeth took over the running of the wine and spirit business at 71/72 High
Street, Exeter. As Bowchers had porter and ale stores, Edward probably helped
look after the bonded liquor store that I visited whilst in Exeter.
A civic-minded man, Edward was elected a Commissioner of Improvement for
the Parish of St Petrock in 1859. Following his mother's death in 1858, he ran the
business until he sold it to Henry Blacking in July 1867 just after his 60th birthday.

The firm of "BOWCHER - WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANTS" had been carried on
for more than half a century in the same premises!
Under Edward's management the business continued to flourish. He lived at 26
Dix's Field, one of the more prosperous areas of Exeter which unhappily was
destroyed in World War II. Whilst staying in that city in 1990 I was actually, but
unknowingly, only about 500 yards from where Edward had lived!
