The George Elworthy family was still at the same address in Exeter when Emma Louise was born in 1841 and she too was baptised at St Stephens. Covering 3.35 acres, St Stephen's was a reasonably large parish, right in the commercial heart of present day Exeter City.
When she married Philip DONALDSON at Sydney in 1862 Emma was not quite 21. Son of Jane nee RIDDLE and architect James Donaldson, Philip was baptised on 07 Oct 1837 at Wakefield in Yorkshire. He was described as an 'iron and line worker' on his marriage certificate but later became a builder and publican. As an extension to the Great Northern Railway, a tunnel was being constructed through the Liverpool Ranges at Murrurundi where they went to live, so Philip probably worked on the line construction.

Emma Louise Elworthy, born on 14 Apl 1841 and baptised at St Stephen's in Exeter, was wed at the lndependent Chapel, Pitt Street, Sydney on 14 Feb 1862 to Philip DONALDSON, bom in the Yorkshire town of Wakefield to Scots parents on O7 Oct1837.
Only sketchy details were given on their certificate of marriage - names, usual place of residence - Gloucester Street for Philip, George Street for Emma, the fact they were bachelor and spinster and that Philip was an "iron and line worker". His sister Margaret Amelia Donaldson and George Elworthy were their witnesses. Family legend says that George Snr did notwant his daughter to marry, so this was possibly brother George.
Following the wedding the young couple went to Murrurundi where Philip's parents, architect James Donaldson and his wife Jean nee RIDDLE lived. There was much activity in the town at the foot of the Liverpool Ranges, 192 rniles n.w of Sydney. The Great North Railway had reached the town and a 528 yard long tunnel which would pierce the range was being built. As an iron and line worker, Philip was most likely employed on this.
In the years 7862-1879 Emma and Philip had nine children, though three of them did not survive infancy - Philip who lived five years from 1872 to 1877; Ellen Annie bom and died in 1875 and William Knowles 1875 who survived for one year.
