Personal Notes:
The next Donaldson daughter Alice born at Murrurundi in 1870 married Francis HOWES on 11 Nov 1891. Frank was born in King Street, Sydney on 9 ApI 1866, son of Irish Mary MULLENS and William Howes who had come to Australia aged 16. By three wives, he had 11 children - Frank being the youngest. William was a merchant tailor with a shop at Circular Quay where the sailing ships berthed.
Frank too became a master tailor and one of the leading exponents of that craft with several shops in Sydney, one of which in 1895 was at 95 King Street. Sharing an occupation, he probably knew George Elworthy and it's quite possible Alice met Frank whilst visiting Grandfather George.
She was certainly in Sydney in November 1885 when she had her photograph taken by Atkinson & Tebbutt, 508 George Street, Sydney. The pretty girl with a retrousse nose, firm mouth and wide-set eyes sent a copy to her Uncle James in Gundagai "From Allie 15 years last birthday". A later photograph shows a tiny-waisted, elegantly dressed young lady with a thick plait round her dark luxuriant curls.
She was only 53 when she died at Manly in 1923 and Frank later married Anne SINGIS. He died at his home in Addison Road, Manly on 04 May 1931, the Gundagai Times reporting that Howes' tailoring business was one of the oldest in the Commonwealth. Both Frank and Alice are interred at Manly Cemetery.
