Daughter of Thomas and Jane Married Harry W in 1885 Sydney with 3 children born of this union. The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950) Tue 4 May 1943 OBITUARIES MRS. GERTRUDE MASON It is with regret that we chronicle the death at a private hospital at Croydon Park, Sydney, on April 20, of Mrs. Gertrude Emily Ann Mason, relict of the late Dr. Harry Wharton Mason of Tumut, at the age of 81 years. The late Mrs. Mason, who was known throughout the Tumut district as the wife of the late popular medico, had been an invalid for the past two years as the result of a stroke and partial blindness. Up till her husband's death three years ago she had enjoyed comparatively good health, with the exception of her failing eyesight. The stroke to which she was subjected about two years ago left her an invalid, whilst her eyesight became gradually more impaired. For some time she resided in Sydney and then came to Tumut, where she was an inmate of Valmar Private Hospital for six months. She was a patient in a private resthome at Croydon Park at the time of her demise, which was caused by another stroke. The late Mrs. Mason was a native of Brisbane [sic should be Sydney], her maiden name being Beck, and in the year 1883 [sic should be 1885] she married the late Dr. H. W. Mason, who had come to Tumut two years previously after being educated at Edinburgh University, Scotland, to set up his medical practice. The name of the late Dr. H. W. Mason will be revered for all time in the annals of Tumut's history for his contribution to Tumut's progress by his association with the dairying industry, Butter Factory, Turf Club, A. and P. Association, Gadara Shire Council and other public organisations; and throughout the years he had a wonderful helpmeet in his wife. Their home was the embodiment of perfect harmony. Every worthwhile public movement had their wholehearted support. When the late Dr. Mason retired in 1913 he and Mrs. Mason took a trip to England and Scotland, where their son Jock was being educated and was then taking his course in medicine at the Edinburgh University. They returned to Tumut and lived in retirement. In 1922 Dr. Mason became invalided and was able to get about only in a wheel-chair, and from that time right up until his death Mrs. Mason personally cared for him and attended to his every want. The late Mrs. Mason is survived by the son Jock (Dr.J. W. Mason), of Tumut, and one daughter, Phyllis (Mrs. Geo. Mack), of "Weenbah," Trangie (now in charge of Bayswater House for Service Women, Sydney). The remains were privately cremated in Sydney and the ashes were brought to Tumut, where their interment took place in the C.of E. portion of the Tumut Old Cemetery. Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside. |
