OBITUARY MISS EMMA C. BROUGHTON
As briefly mentioned in last issue, the death occurred on Tuesday last of Miss Emma Church Broughton, of 'The Grange,' Tumut, where she had resided for the past, four years on account of failing health. Deceased had passed her 83rd mile-stone on April 22 last. She was the third daughter of the late Robert Kennedy and Sarah Broughton, two of the earliest Tumut pioneers, was born at Gadara, now the home of her youngest brother, Mr. James Broughton sr, and a grand-daughter of Commissary Wm. Broughton who came to Australia with the First Fleet in 1788, under the auspices of Governor Phillip. The coffined remains were brought to Tumut by train on Thursday, and conveyed to All Saints' Church, where a short service was conducted by Rev. A. W. Harris, of St. Paul's, Adelong (in the absence of Rev. F. W. Rettie, Rector of All Saints', Tumut, confined to his bed with sickness). The funeral moved from there, forming a lengthy cortege of representative citizens, for the Old Cemetery, where the burial took place alongside the grave of her late brother, Archer, and other departed members of the family. Mrs. Emily Broughton, ''The Grange," Tumut, and Mr. James Broughton sr., "Gadara," are the only surviving members of this historic family. Those who predeceased her were Mrs.Harry J. Sharp (Greenhills, Adelong), Mrs. W. B. Clayton, Mrs. W. C. Webb, Mrs W. O. Manning and Messrs John Archer (Tumut), and R. K. Broughton (Gadara). Rev. A. W. Harris officiated at the burial service and the pall-bearers were Messrs. Jas. Broughton jr., Robert Sharp, J. Burleigh Sharp, Archer Broughton (nephews), and Douglas and Thomas Burbury.
