TRAGEDY AT GADARA
Sad Death of Mr. James Broughton
Mr. James Broughton, well-known farmer and grazier, of Gadara, between Tumut and Adelong, was found hanging from the property stock gallows near the homestead last Wednesday night. Mr. Broughton attended Tumut stock sale that afternoon, when he appeared in his usual good spirits. After returning home he went from the house before having his tea. His wife was occupied for a time putting the children to bed, and, as deceased did not return, she went to ascertain his whereabouts, and was horrified to find him hanging from the gallows.
An inquest will, be held on a date to be fixed.Deceased was 55 the only son of the late Mr. James E. Broughton and of Mrs. Minnie Broughton of Gadara. His grandfather the late Mr. R.K. Broughton, was one of the very early pioneers of the Tumut district arriving in those parts in 1837. Deceased took over portion of the original property, and erected a modern home. He married Miss Christina Sherrin, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sherrin, Tumut, by whom he is survived, together with two sons, James and William. (Gadara) About twelve months ago deceased, was involved in a car smash, near Dubbo in which he sustained severe head and spinal injuries. He was laid up in Dubbo' Hospital for many weeks, and later had to seek further medical attention in Sydney. He had been to the city again, recently for an X-ray, but the results were by no means serious— a slightly crushed rib, which would not have come against him much. A keen sportsman he was interested. In horse racing In his younger days he took on amateur riding for a time. He. worked on the same property all his life, had considerable experience in wool growing and cattle raising, and possessed keen business acumen.
