Personal Notes:

The following is an extract from a letter written from the trenches at Anzac Cove, under date July 26th, by Captain Verge, to a mutual friend of himself and the late Sergeant F. Tresilian (brother of Mr. T. F. Tresilian, Young), who was killed in action on July 21st:-"As you probably know by now, poor old Tresilian was killed. He was the finest man in the regiment and would have had a commission in about a mouth. Absolutely without nerves, he was one of the bravest chaps I ever knew. He was too foolhardy, however; he used to be out every night prowling round the Turks' trenches, and would stay out for hours. On one occasion he was surrounded by Turks, but lay quite still and escaped. Whenever a night patrol was on Tresilian was chosen as the sergeant in charge. He was hit six times before, and only that afternoon at 2 was hit by a splinter in the thumb and face. I told him to be careful as his luck had been wonderful. He was hit once in the ribs by a shell piece weighing about seven lbs. all jagged; but It hit him with the flat surface and bruised all his side and then went on 25 yards further and stuck In the earth. Poor old chap, he was putting out barbed wire, and a sniper got him fair above the right eye and killed him stone dead. He and I were great friends. I took to him at once, and I never wish to meet a bettor fellow. I'm awfully sorry he's gone and had he not he would not only have had a commission, but the D.C.M., in all probability. Everyone had him marked down as our best man. He is buried just about 50 yards from where I sit underground and on a place called Shrapnel Green, about a mile from Gabe Tepe on the map. As you doubtless know, we left our horses at Cairo. We've had lots of killed and wounded, sick, etc., and are much under strength. It is jolly hard to keep alive I can tell you." Herald" under the heading of "Sergeants Three," Trooper "Bluegum" pens the following particulars of the deatfh of Sergeant Tresilian, who was a (brother of Mr. T. F. Tresilian, of Young. A strong, dominant personality was Tresilian, one of the very best troop sergeants that ever joined the Light Horse. He seemed to love the firing line like home. He was quite fearless. Somehow he seemed to revel the roar of battle. On one occasion the Turks sent a dozen shells at our little section of the trenches smashing down the parapets, making the place a wreck, wounding two men, and half-blinding, half deafening, half choking, half burying six of us. When I could see and hear and breathe again I saw Tresilian laughing merrily, "Hello, Bluegum, he said; "not killed yet?" He came from Humula, near Wagga where his people were well-known farmers. Till a young man he remained on the farm, and was known throughout the district as a good sport a good cricketer and footballer, and a fine rider and shot. Just the typical Australian Light Horseman, though more sturdily built than the average. He tired, however, of the farm, and yearned for the freer life of the Western plains. So he tackled station life, became a station manager, rode over the whole of the north-west, went to the Northern Territory in search of pastoral lands, and when the war broke out was managing a station in the Boggabri district. He had seen service in South Africa and he once more volunteered to serve the King. On Gallipoli his scouting and part work were excellent. He seemed to have a charmed life, for he had many narrow escapes in the open and in the trenches. On the day he was killed a bullet whizzed past his head, just wounding his cheek slightly. Later on he and Sergeant Paddy Ryan were putting barbed wire entanglements in front of our trenches. A sniper's rifle cracked. Ryan escaped. Tresilian fell dead.
