| - Notes: Death Of Mrs. H. Oates FORMER MAYORESS OF WAGGA : FRIEND OF THE SOLDIERS
The death occurred at her residence, 'Skelgill', Beckwith street, Wagga, at 12.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon of Mrs. Hannah Oates, wife of Mr. Hugh Oates. Though Mrs. Oates had been in failing health for a long time the news of her death will come as a shock to many and with feelings of regret to all who knew her. A woman of a gentle and retiring nature, she nevertheless, as Mayoress of Wagga for several terms, as a war worker, and as one of the most active workers for many years of the Methodist Church, came frequently before the public and those best knew her worth who came into closest contact with her. Her public duties claimed much of her time; but she never allowed them to interfere with a proper wifely interest in her home and she was a devoted mother to her children nursing one of her sons, Tyson, who died some years ago, through a long and trying illness. Mts. Oates was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tyson, of 'Skelgill', Ullina, near Clunes (V.), and it was the name of the home in which she was born that she and her husband chose for their own home which they set up together in Wagga and under the hospitable roof of which many have received a real homely welcome. Mr. and Mrs. Oates were married at Clunes and from there went to Glen Innes, coming later to Wagga, where they have lived continuously for 32 years. They had five children and all those who survive, Mrs. George Grant, (Vera), of Borambola; Messrs. James and Charies Oates, and Miss Belle Oates, were present at the last. She is also survived by her husband and one brother, Mr. Charles Tyson, of Webb-street, Croydon. To the members of the family the deepest sympathy of the whole community is extended. Mr. Oates had four terms as Mayor of Wagga, two of them in the war period, and in carrying out the duties of Mayoress, Mrs. Oates displayed the greatest tact and that kindly consideration for others which endeared her to many. Of late years, owing to ill health, she was not able to take any part in public life, but sick or well, the soldiers always had her sympathy. During the war, when she was Mayoress, she was indefatigable in her attentions to them and was a member of the Comforts Fund committee. Since the return of the men she has assisted them whenever she could. This is much appreciated by all the diggers in the town and district. One of her boys, James, saw service with the A.I.F., and Mr. Oates took part in the march of the Kangaroos and was Mayor when the Mayor's unit was formed and went into camp with it. The funeral will take place today. There will be a short service at the house at 3 o'clock, and the funeral will leave at 3.15 for the Methodist portion of the Wagga cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the Wagga Methodist Church tomorrow night. - Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga, NSW : 1911 - 1954)Saturday 7 November 1931 |
