The Tumut and Adelong Times 24 Aug 1926
THE LATE MR. H. G. COTTAM. With the death of Mr. Henry George Cottam, of Bago, which occurred at the Tumut and District Hospital on Monday of last week, there is removed from our midst another of the hardy old pioneers who are rapidly becoming few and far between. He had attained the ripe age of 82 years. The son of the late Ralph Cottam, he was born in Manchester, England, and with his parents and the other members of the family came to New South Wales 69 years ago. They eventually settled at 'Two Brooks,' a small holding next 'Ardrossan', between Batlow and Laurel Hill. Marrying at Gundagai 53 years ago Miss Elizabeth Fifield, they reared a large family, consisting of five sons and six daughters, viz: George (Batlow), Henry (Queanbeyan), Charles, Jack (Batlow), Seth (Laurel Hill), Mrs J. Hilton (Tarcutta), Mrs. P. Gottschalk (Kunama), Mrs. W. Hartnett (Yaven Creek), Mrs. Norman Dugel [sic should be Angel] (Sydney), Mrs. V. Martin (Canberra), Mrs C. Wellington (Canberra). He contracted bronchitis a week before his demise and came, to the Tumut Hospital for treatment. He was an honorable man in all his dealings, and respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place on Wednesday last, the burial being in the Church of England portion of the new cemetery at Tumut, Rev. T. A. Gair performing the last sad rites and Messrs. Fuller and Burt conducting the mortuary arrangementements.
