|
Isabella was born in London and immigrated to Australia with her family at the age of 12 in 1848 aboard the "Waverley".
Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950), Friday 2 October 1914, page 3 Found Dead Mrs. Isabella Brown (formerly the widow of the late Mr. C. Guy) was found dead in bed at her home at Nimbo (Brungle), on Tuesday evening last. Deceased was last seen alive by her son George, at about sundown the previous evening. She was of a particularly reserved disposition, and refused frequent offers made to her to live with members of the family; and she also declined to allow anyone to live with her. Having attained the ripe old age of 82 years, she, of course, was somewhat feeble, but always enjoyed good health. She was supplied with all necessities by members of her family, who did all in their power to make the old lady comfortable. Dr. Bowne had given professional attention to her a short time back, but there were no serious symptoms of illness. When her son saws her, Monday evening, she seemed to be in her usual state of health, therefore the discovery made on Tuesday afternoon, as can well be imagined, occasioned considerable surprise. Information of the sad occurrence was sent to Coroner Groves, who, with Dr. Clouston and Constable Cahill, journeyed to the late residence of deceased, on Wednesday forenoon, and an inquest was held. G. B. Guy deposed that deceased was his mother, and he last saw her alive at about 6 o'clock on the previous Monday evening. She was walking up and down the verandah at her home, and appeared to be alright. Through some peculiar notion she had she declined to live with anyone or to allow any person to live with her; she would not ever allow anyone to do anything for her. She had been that way for years. She was also very deaf. Never complained of feeling un-well. On Tuesday, evening, at about 7 o'clock, witness went over to his mother's place with bread that had been left for her by the baker; he also felt curious when seeing the doors shut all that day. Not being able to attract attention by knocking hard at the door, he got inside through the window, and found his mother lying in bed just as if she were lying there asleep. He caught hold of her hand, and found it cold and stiff, indicative that life was extinct. Deceased's age was 82 years, and she had been married twice, the first time in Yass, to his father, C. B. Guy, and the second time to William Brown, about 15 years ago. Dr. Clouston deposed that deceased had the appearance of being well nourished, and there were no marks of violence on the body. She was lying in the bed with her legs partly drawn up, in a position such as if she was asleep. She had on her proper night apparel and her face was ashen looking. There were no signs of any disorder in the room. Death would probably have taken place early on Tuesday morning, the cause being senile decay. Constable Cahill deposed to having received information of the death from G. B. Guy, by telephone message on Tuesday night. He found nothing to indicate foul play of any kind. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Anglican portion of the old cemetery, on Thursday morning, along side those of the first husband, the late Mr. Charles Guy, who, it will be remembered, met his death, about 25 years ago, through a buggy accident on the Brungle road, his horses having bolted and upset the vehicle. Deceased had been a resident of the district for about 60 years. She was born in England, and came out to this is country when about 12 years old, and 8 years later was married to Mr. C. B. Guy, who was a great sportsman, and was regarded as one of the most popular men in the district. The estate he acquired at Brungle and Nimbo includes some exceedingly fertile land, growing crops thereon at the present time looking remarkably well far the desperate season we are passing through. The members of deceased's family are, in order of ages, Mrs. Jas. Brooks, Charles Edward Guy, and George Benjamin Guy. Gravesite Details Buried next to her 1st husband. No inscription. |
