On 16 Apr 1838 Dublin, Ireland James was convicted sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing a handkerchief. He arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney on 10 Sep 1838 on the ship "Clyde". James married Mary Ann Jane nee Hickman on 27 May 1849 in the Catholic Church, in Nimmitabel, NSW. They had 7 (seven), children.
