DEATH OF MR. J. S. MCEVOY. COOMA. Saturday The death occurred at Wollondibby Station, Crackenback, Snowy River, of Mr. John Sheil McEvoy, aged 83 years. He was the second son of the family of 12 of James McEvoy. His father came to New South Wales as a youth, and he was the first man to select land in the Moonbah district. He bought Boloco Station in 1835, with Edward McGuigan. In 1836 he married Mary Sheil, the first white woman to cross the Snowy River. Their eldest daughter, Mary, was the first white child born west of the the Snowy in the Monaro. James McEvoy later took up the Wollondibby run of 11,520 acres, where Mr. John McEvoy spent his life.

Death of Mr. John Shiel McEvoy THE ALTAR BOY OF 'AROUND THE BOREE LOG.' At his home 'Crackenback,' Jindabyne, on April 28th, from pneumonia following a brief illness, at the advanced age of 83 years, Mr. John Shiel McEvoy, of Wollondibby, passed away. Deceased was the second son, and one of a family of twelve children of the late Mr. and Mrs. James McEvoy. His father, who was born in Dublin in 1808, came to New South Wales as a young man, and was among the first to select land in the Moonbah district. He bought land at Boloco in 1835, carrying on grazing in partnership with a Mr. Edward McGuigan. In the year '36 he married Miss Mary Shield, who is said to have been one of the first white women to cross the Snowy River. Their eldest child, Mary, was born in 1839, at Boloco, and it was claimed that she was the first white child born on the western side of the Snowy River in the Monoro District. The late John Shield McEvoy spent the whole of his life about Wollondibby. His wife, who was Miss Mary Hemmings, predeceased him 47 years ago, and their only son John gave his life in France in the Great War. Deceased was a devout Catholic, and was altar boy for Rev. Father Newman in 1866, and he continued to serve Mass until last year. He was always a great worker for the church and was a trustee of St. Thomas' Church at Moonbah, where he rode on horseback to attend Mass a few days before his death. He was held in highest respect by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Minahan, one grand daughter, and one great grand-daughter, and one sister, Mrs. Anne Pendergast, of Stockinbingal. In his last illness he was attended by Rev. Father Brennan, who also officiated at the graveside In the Catholic section of Moonbah General Cemetery. A very large number were present at the burial to pay the last tribute of respect. Four nephews T. J., J. J., E. W., and W. M. Pendergast acted as pall-bearers. In 'Around the Boree Log' by 'John O'Brien,' occurs the poem 'The Altar Boy,' and many of the friends of the late Mr. J. S. McEvoy believe that the lines relate to him, as in almost every respect, allowing for a little poetic license and jocularity, they accord perfectly with him and his habit. He served Mass at Moonbah up to 1932, when he had passed his 82nd birthday. He was the server of the first Mass in the new Jindagyne Church at its opening a little over three years ago. 'John O'Brien's' poem, 'The Altar Boy,' is as follows: Now McEvoy was altar-boy
As long as I remember;
He was, bedad, a crabbed lad
And sixty come December.
Faith, no one dared to "interfere"
In things the which concernin'
"Twas right and just to him to trust
Who had the bit o' learnin'
To serve the priest; and here at least
He never proved defaulter;
So, wet or dry, you could rely
To find him on the Altar.

The acolyte in surplice white
Some admiration rouses:
But McEvoy was altar-boy
In '"Sund'y coat-'n-trouses."
And out he'd steer, the eye severe
The depths behind him plumblin'
In dread I wot (he once was "cot").
The priest might not be comin'.
Then, stepping slow on heel and toe,
No more he'd fall or falter,
But set likewise with hands and eyes
He'd move about the altar.

A master-stroke of other folk
Might start the opposition,
And some, mebbe. In Jealousy
Bedout their erudition:
But McEvoy was altar-boy A
nd, spite of all their chattin',
It 'put the stuns' on lesser ones
To hear him run the Latin
And faith, he knew the business through
The rubrics and the psalter:
You never met his 'alkals' yet
When servin' on the Altar.

The priest, indeed, might take the lead
By right of Holy Orders,
But McEvoy was altar-boy
And just upon the borders.
So sermons dry he'd signify
With puckered brows behovin',
An', If you please, at homilies
He'd nod the head approvin':
And all the while a cute old smile
Picked out the chief defaulter:
Faith, wet or dry, the crabbed eye
Would 'vet' you from the Altar.
