| Jonas and Louisa were my great, great, great grandparents. Thier eldest son Daniel married Alice Hartley from Cambridgeshire. Daniel and Alice had 7 children. Their eldest daughter, also called Elizabeth Amos was born in 1857 at Saddleworth, West Yorkshire. Elizabeth amos was my great grandmother. Her father Daniel Amos was the son of Jonas Amos (1811-1873) and Louisa Amos (1812. Daniel Amos married Alice Hartley (1831. They had 7 children : Daniel, Elizabeth (my great grandma) William Hartley, John Amos, Rachel Amos, Emily Amos and Mary Jane (Polly). Mary Jane (Polly) married Thomas Shirt and they lived in Darwen. They did not have any children. Elizabeth Amos married 3 times and had 4 children : Charles Mather (one of the first soldiers killed in the first world war ( 24th August 1914) in northern France. An eye witness said that he had his head blown off. His body was never found. Her husband Joseph died and she married again. She married Richard Nuttall and had 3 more children : Ernest, Amos and Alice. Charles Mather took the name of his brothers and sister -Charlie Nuttall. Richard died and she had to bring up 4 children on her own. They lived in Standish near Wigan and she took in lodgers She married her third husband (Anthony Gavin)when she was much older. Anthony Gavin was one of her lodgers -in fact he was the last one left. He said that he could not stay in a house with an unmarried woman so she married him. Alice, Elizabeth's only daughter was my grandmother (1898-83). Alice only had one child- Doris (1921-97). Doris was my mother. She married James William Musker (1911-84) and had two children me (Josephine)born 1949 and my brother (Nigel) born 1954. Nigel had one son -Jordan. I had 4 children: Mark (1973), Claire (1976), Daniel (1981) and Ben (1986). Elizabeth's son Ernest had a daughter, (Ethel) by his first wife who died during the first world war. he married again to a lady called Annie and had a lot of children -all sons so far as I know. They lived in Bradford. Her youngest son, Amos also married twice. He had a daughter (Ada)to his first wife who also died in the First World War. He then married Helen and had 3 children: Barbara (who went to live in Africa -Zimbabwe (she had 2 children -a girl Francesca and a son Blayde); Patricia who had 3 children with her husband Keith Renshaw: Elizabeth, Alison and Ian (they all lived in Sheffield); and Keith who married and lived in Canada running a lighthouse -he had loads of children. One of Elizabthe Amos' brothers, before the 1st world war, (either Daniel or (William) Harley Amos invented the colour Khaki. They worked at a bleach and dye works. He got about 2 shillings for his invention. His firm made millions by selling the colour to the army and dying their fabrics for uniforms. Up until that time the British army wore red. I have a lot of photos of where the Standish branch of the family ended up, also of the house where my gret, great aunt Polly lived with her husband.
