The Tumut and Adelong Times 1 Jul 1930 OBITUARY DEATH OF MRS JACOB BALLARD The death of Mrs Jacob Ballard, of Goobragandra, which took place last Sunday week was quite sudden and unexpected. She had walked from her home to see a sick sister at Cribb's, which she left later in the day, and, not having returned late in the afternoon, her foster children went out in search of her, only to find her dead body near the track. The distance between the two places was less than two miles. Dr. Browne having treated deceased for heart trouble just previously to the occurrence, and there being no suspicious circumstances surrounding the case an inquest was dispensed with, death evidently resulting from heart-failure. She was 76 years of age. Deceased was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Cribb, of Goobragandra. In her early life she was a smart active young woman, and a fine horsewoman, being a competitor on different occasions on the Tumut Showground, both in the Lady's Hack and over the hurdles, and was quite at home in the sidesaddle if mounted on a good jumper. She married Jacob Ballard, of Midway, 38 years ago, and has resided on Goobragandra the whole of her married life. There was no issue to the union, but she reared two adopted children, Alice Buckley and Fred Tutty. The former, who still resides at the home, has been a great comfort to the aged couple. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband and the two adopted children, five brothers (Alfred, Charles and Edward, of Goobragandra, Jack of Tumut, and William of Bombowlee) and two sisters (Amelia of Goobragandra and Mrs L. Brown, of Newtown, Tumut), one brother Fred having predeceased her. Mr. C. Burt carried out the funeral arrangements, and the Rev. F. W. Rettie, C. of E. Rector, officiated at the grave. After reading the service the clergyman made feeling reference to the work of the deceased lady in connection with her church during her young life. The coffin-bearers were Messrs Charles and Thos. Cribb (brother), Fred Tutty, Fred Atkinson, Ernie Bullock and Cecil Piper.
