The Late Mrs. Beveridge,
The death of Mrs. Beverldge, of 'Dollar Vale,' widow of Mr. John Beveridge, which was briefly referred to in our issue on Tuesday, removes another pioneer from our district. The Beverldges were associated with the pioneering of the Wantabagery districts and for half a century they were identified with the progress of the southern districts. The late Mr. Beveridge was a noted breeder of stud merinos and his sons and nephew have carried on the reputation established at Wantabagery by him. The death of Mrs. Beveridge recalls the stirring days of the gold rushes. Eurongilly became famous for the rich deposits of gold discovered there about half a century ago, and which attracted miners from all parts of this State and Victoria. When, however, the rich gold pockets at Eurongilly petered out, the district settled down to the more prosaic and more settled industry of wool. The late Mrs. Beveridge and her husband had the very unpleasant experience of being held up by Moonlight's gang. Fortunately Moonlights career of villainy was terminated the next day when he meet more than his match In the late Constable Carroll of Gundagai, whose force surrounded the McGlebe homestead at Wantabadgery, a few miles from the Beverldges' home and dramatically brought to an end the gang's operations. Mrs. Beveridge, it may be stated was bom at Bradford, England, 71 years ago. She was the daughter of Dr. William Robinson, of that town, and she came with her parents to Australia as a child. The family settled first at Melbourne, where Dr. Robinson practised for a time. Miss Robinson was married to Mr John Beveridge in 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Beveridge lived at Wantabagery for the first few years and moved to 'Dollar Vale' 52 years ago, where she resided until her death. Her husband predeceased her In 1904, and of the family of nine of the union Messrs. H. V, Beveridge, of Dollar Vale, George Beveridge, of Camden, Dal. Beveridge, of Manly, Mrs. Mat. Sawyer, of Eulomo, Mrs. C. Granvllle, of Sydney, and Miss Alice Beveridge, of Sydney. The Daily Advertiser May 1926 |
