Note 1: Australian Town and Country Journal (Sydney) 22 Sept 1877
The death of John Mathie, a Queensland colonist,
is announced, under most distressing circumstances.
He was about sixty years of age, and arrived in Eng-
land in June last. Subsequently he took up his
residence at a coffee-house in the Commercial-road,
near the Docks, where he drank a great deal, and
appeared strange and vacant in his manner. He never
said anything to those about him as to his antecedents,
except that he had been a fruiterer at Brisbane, and
that he had come over in the Durham from Queens-
land. He kept on drinking, and drifted from bad
to worse, until at length the poor fellow was found
dead, hanging by the neck, in his bedroom. At a
coroner's inquest, Mr. Thomas Hamilton, of 32, Charing
Cross, the indefatigable secretary to the Queensland
Agency, deposed that the deceased remitted to the
Agent-General a bill for £80, some time since. On ar-
riving in England he called at the agency, and drew
£10 on account. He appeared then to be so peculiar
in his manner that a man was sent with him to see
him safely to the conveyance he had. He told wit-
ness that he had three daughters in Australia, and one
at Dollar, in Clackmannanshire, Scotland, and that
lie intended to go to Dollar. The jury returned a
verdict " That deceased died by his own hand, but
what his state of mind was at the time, the evidence
failed to show." A question then arose as to the dis-
posal of the property of deceased, and it was decided
that the officer should take charge of everything until
the legal representatives of the deceased claimed
them.
