Note 5: Morning Post (Cairns) 7 Jan 1902 The Late R. A. Kingsford. Cairns loses a very old citizen by the death of the late Mr. R. A. Kingsford, who passed out over the bar on Thursday night last. The deceased gentleman was more than two decades ago in business in South Brisbane, and was very successful. He afterwards resided in Tasmania, and made periodical trips North, coming as far as Cairns, where he ultimately settled early in the eighties. Taking an active interest in local matters he showed much earnestness in the welfare of the local Anglican Church, and assisted it mater- ially by putting a liberal hand into his pocket. He and the late John Cairns married two sisters, the Misses Dexter, both of whom are now widows. By his first marriage he had two daughters and a son, Mr. Arthur Kingsford. Of the former one is now Mrs. W. H. Swallow, and the other Mrs. W. C. Smith. Many will remember Mr. Smith as one-time manager of the local branch of the Q.N. Bank. By his second marriage he had one daughter. Deceased, who had reached his 80th year in October of last year, was soon after his arrival Mayor of Cairns, and on one occaqsion aspired to Parlia- mentary honors, opposing Mr. F. T. Wimble for the Cairns electorate in that memorable campaign, which cost Mr. Wimble some thousands in litigation. Of late years the strong and dogmatic dis- position, which was his dominant trait, had toned down into a quiet reserve, and the energy of his younger years had oozed out until recently he became an invalid and required the unremitting care and attention which he received from his sorrowing widow. So away into the unknown goes another of the old identities of this town.
