The many friends of Mr. J. Darwen will hear with regret of the death of his wife, which took place at the Home Hill Hospital on Wednesday at 1 o'clock at the age of 52 years The late Mrs. Darwen was a daughter, of the late Mr. and Mrs B. R. Cornford. who had spent many years of their life in the Ayr district. She came to Australia with her parents from Kent (England.) 48 years ago, and most of her life had been spent on the Burdekin The deceased was a most industrious woman in her home life.
A husband and ten children are left to mourn their sad loss, three of whom are married, one of the daughters being Mrs. Joseph Lewis (Ayr) whose husband recently met with a serious accident, whilst, driving a tractor at Airdmillan the other married members of the family being Mrs. J. Searle and Mr. A. J. Darwen, both of Ayr. For many years the family have been interested in the dairying industry and it was only some 12 months ago they came to Home Hill to follow this calling. Mr. Jack Darwen is a brother of the late Mr. W. H. Darwen, who took such an active part in the public life of Bowen. The burial service took place at Ayr, when a large circle of friends gathered to pay their respects to one hold in high esteem.

OBITUARY JOHN DARWEN
The death took place at Ayr on Monday of Mr John Darwen, a very old resident of Ayr, and member of one of Bowen’s oldest families. The late “Jack" Darwen was born in Bowen eighty years ago, being a son of Mr. and Mr. James Darwen, who came to Bowen from England in 1863. Jack was the last surviving member of their family of seven, which included the founder of the “Bowen Independent,” the late Mr. W. H. Darwen. Jack was looked upon us a sickly child in what was a rather vigorous family, but his later life belied this unpromising start. At the age of nineteen he went to Ayr and engaged in all sorts of arduous jobs, before settling down to the butchering trade, which he followed for more than forty years. Apart from working long hours at this trade, he conducted a sugar farm at Airdmillan with the help of his sturdy wife, and for one period of five years they had a dairy farm at Home Hill. They raised a family of twelve children, of whom ten survive. His wife predeceased him in 1934, and Jack had spent the reremaining years in Ayr. A quiet spoken and gentle man, with a lively sense of humour, he was held in high regard by all who knew him, and this was evidenced by the very large attendance at the funeral, which was held on Tuesday afternoon. Kev. Canon A- D- Thorpe performed the last sad rites at the graveside.
