from marriage of son Frank
Ephraim's mother Mary Ann Kelham, having been widowed twice, married Michael Handley. Michael is the father of Naomi, Ephraim's wife. So what does he call her? Mother or mother in law? Must have been an unusual and difficult situation to accept! And that would make Naomi's mother in law also her step mother! My great uncle Fred told me his father was a 'bible basher': a hell fire lay preacher and church warden. He was apparently strong on discipline and does look a bit stern in his photos. Fred told me that one time when he (Fred) had done something naughty his father had locked him in the church bell tower. This would have been at Tetney or North Cotes. Jill Shepherd, the granddaughter of Ephraim's daughter (Fred's sister) Alice has a quite different story. Ephraim used to play a double bass. He apparently owned more than one. They used to be stored in the parlour of his house, hung up in green baize covers. As a child Alice's daughter Doris was scared of these, thinking they looked like ghosts or strung up bodies. Ephraim understandingly led the child in and showed her what they really were. I have a photo of Ephraim playing the double base in the back yard of his cottage. Its possible Ephraim and Naomi also had joints of ham hung up in their kitchen, so a child would naturally have put two and two together to make six! |
