MRS. ANNIE GALL. There passed away at the Kennedy Hospital n Tuesday night, an old re sident of Bowen in the person of Mrs. Annie Gull wife of Mr. J. Gall, Her- bert Street, after a lengthy Illness. Mrs. Gall is a native of this district, being born at Strathmore Station 68 years ago, and is a daughter of the district’s oldest inhabitant, Mrs. C. Meizner. This old lady is about 93 years of age, and was born in Ger many, arriving in Australia by the sailing vessel Larlashelly, and settled in Bowen In 1862, where, with her husband she ran a dairy farm. She is still active and carries her years well, having raised a family of 13 children while her descendants num ber 51 grandchildren, 68 great-grand children and 3, great-great-grand children. The deceased married the late Mr. Albert.Darwen, who prede ceased her some 36 years ago and about 16 years later married Mr. J. Gall. The late Mrs. Gull was liked and respected by a large circle of friends. She has occupied the posi tion of caretaker to the local State School for many years past, and was a willing worker for all causes and always ready to contribute to charit able movements. She leaves a hus band, mother, one brother (Mr. Fred Meissner, (Bowen), four sisters (Mes dames R. Boyd, Bowen, R. Drinkwater Kelsey Creek, J. Hinschen, Proser pine, and G. Day, Mareeba), four sons (Messrs. A. C. Darwen, J. H. Darwen and A. . Darwen Bowen, and W. Darwen, (Sydney) and two daught-. ers (Mesdames.F. Barton, Townsville, and W. Mein , Sydney.) to mourn their loss. The funeral left the Church of England at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Rev. F. W. Palmer perforating the last sad rites at the graveside. Note 4: Burial record Bowen Independent 19 Jan 1945 OBITUARY The death occurred in Townsville early this week of Annie Elizabeth Barton, wife of Mr. T. H. Barton, of No. 10 Railway Avenue. Railway Estate. The deceased was a Bowen native, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Darwen, and married another Bowenite, in Mr. T. H. Barton. The latter was employed in the railway and eventually went, to reside in Townsville. She leaves four brothers, Messrs. Arthur, Albert (“Sonny"). John of Bowen, and William (“Waffle”) - of Sydney, and one sister, Mrs. Mein (Sydney), two sons Eric and Les, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. T. J. Hughes, to mourn their loss, and to whom sympathy is extended.

Note 5: Burial record Bowen Independent 29 July 1949 Obituary The sudden passing of Arthur James Darwen on Saturday night last removed from our midst a very popular figure in the working and sporting spheres of Bowen. "Artie", as he was familiarly known, was 60 years of age at the time of death. The deceased had been under medical treatment for some time, but after a week off duty had resumed work during the previous week as a leading hand at the Coke Works, where he had been employed since its inception. The keenest of fishermen, he had planned to make his regular fishing trip on Sunday, but death intervened. The news came as a shock to his family and many, friends. Artie had no enemies, being a good honest toiler, who had worked in many parts of the district, earning the affection and respect of all for his | quiet, good natured ways. As a boating and fishing enthusiast his name will be long remembered. For many years he was a noted skipper on the harbour, in the craft Growler, Foam, Surprise and Acorn. A hardy sea farer, he sailed the 19 foot Foam to Townsville for regattas. On one occasion, with his uncle, the late W. H. Darwen, he sailed the Foam and the 28ft. Irene from Townsville to Bowen, with the two boats lashed together. In later years, Artie’s favourite past time was fishing, and he was noted for his uncanny skill at this sport. A native of Bowen, he had frequented the harbour’s fishing spots since boy hood; and; it could he safely said that he never missed. When others returned from the day empty-handed, his bag would contain the inevitable slate bream and other fish, hard to catch. It was appropriate that he should have been called by the greatest of Fishermen, on the eve of a quiet day, with his gear ready. Deep sympathy is extended to his sorrowing wife, daughters Mesdames - J. Pantall (Bowen) and Nielson (Mt. Isa) and sons Charlie, Ned and Arthur, and his sister Mrs. W. Mein (Sydney) and brothers Albert, (“Sonny”), John and Bill (Sydney). The funeral took place at 4 p.m. on Sunday from the Salvation Army Hall, Captain Wight performing the last sad rites at the graveside. A large number of fellow employees and friends formed a guard of honour at the cemetery entrance.
