HUGHES.—On the 29th July, at Port Douglas,
William Madeley Hughes, only son of John
Hughes, tailor, Bowen.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT PORT DOUGLAS.
The Times says :-Last Sunday afternoon
news arrived in town that Mr. William
Hughes, proprietor of the Carriers Arms Hotel,
situated about twenty-three miles from here,
on the Herberton road, had met with a fatal
accident, about noon that day when out riding.
It appears that Mr. Hughes in company with
his son and another boy were galloping home,
and when about a hundred yards from the
house, deceased went full force against a tree.
He was picked up immediately, but death
was almost instantaneous, as the skull was
crushed in. The tree in question was but a
small sapling, and there is no other tree for a
good distance around. The circumstance of
the accident is explained by the fact that the
galloping caused a cloud of dust on the spot,
and the deceased could not have seen where
he was going to. He leaves a wife and six
children to mourn his loss.

About John Hughes
John Hughes was my Great Great Great Grandfather who was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales around 1810 and died 23 July 1886 in Richmond, Queensland, Australia. He married Catherine Madeley on 9th March 1835 in Ellesmere, Shropshire, England. He immigrated with his wife and 8 children to Australia and arrived in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia on 29th April 1853 on a ship called, "Florentia". John was a Tailor, could read and write and complained of incivility of the trip to Australia. John is buried in the Bowen Cemetery.

His parents were John Hughes and Ann Evans.

Emma: b 12 Dec. 1835 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales, d 1885, Queensland. She married a Walter Donald on 18 Jan 1854 at Goomburra, Queensland. Walter was born 12 March 1825 at Rothiemay, Banffshire, Scotland and died 20 Oct 1896 at Chinchilla, Queensland, Australia.

Hannah: b abt 1838 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and died 25 Oct 1902 at Dalby, Queensland. She married George Donald on 11 Dec, 1855, Goomburra, Queensland, Australia. George was born 18 May, 1832 at Rothiemay, Banffshire, Scotland and died 8 Aug 1881 at Irvingdale, Queensland, Australia. Hannah could read and write.

William Madeley: b Bef 17 Nov 1839 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and died 29 Jul 1883 at Thornborough, Queensland, Australia. He married Sarah Greenwood on 24 Apr 1861 at Maryborough, Queensland. Sarah was born 30 Nov 1845 at Paddington, Sydney, NSW. She died 6 May 1890 at Port Douglas, Queensland. William was burial 30 July 1883 at Port Douglas Cemetery? he died from falling off his horse. He was a Publican. Sarah his wife was a Licenced Victualler.

Joseph: b Bef 1 Dec 1841 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and died 11 Mar 1864 at Bowen, Queensland. Joseph died from drowning in the Don River, he could read.

Eliza: b Bef 25 Feb 1844 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and died 16 Sep 1925 at Bowen, Queensland. Eliza married Thomas Austin, 24 Dec. 1863 at Goondiwindi, Queensland. Thomas was born 30 Jan 1838 at Hessett, Suffolk, England and died 23 April 1921 at Blackall, Queensland, Australia. Eliza could read.

Lydia Caroline: b Bef. 9 Aug 1846, Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and died Abt. 21 Oct 1848 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales.

Catherine: b Bef. 6 July 1849 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and died 5 Feb 1925 at Bowen, Queensland. Catherine married George James Boulter on 9 March 1866 in Bowen, Queensland. George was born 26 May 1837 at Pucklechurch, Gloucestershire, England and died 31 Aug 1910 at Bowen, Queensland.

Caroline: b Bef. 24 March 1852 at Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and died 1888 somewhere in Queensland. Caroline married twice, her first husband's name was Charles Bowers. He and Caroline married 23 Sep 1882 in Queensland. Then she married Joseph William in 1890, Queensland.

Elizabeth Ann: b 19 Jul 1855, Warwick, Queensland and died 1925 at Bowen, Queensland. Elizabeth married John Clement Rufter, 21 July 1873 at Bowen, Queensland. John was born 1847 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England and died in 1899.

Agnes: b 24 July 1859, Warwick, Queensland and died 17 March 1931 at Townsville, Queensland. Agnes married Herbert Eugene Albini Fitzalan in 1882 at Bowen, Queensland. Herbert was born 1858 and died 20 July 1911 in Brisbane, Queensland.
