OBITUARY
HON. J. HODEL
The death occurred on Saturday morn-
ing of the Honourable Joseph Hodel, in
his 93rd year. By his death Townsville
has lost one of its oldest citizens and
a man with a remarkable record of pub
lic service for the city.
The late Mr. Hodel was a native of
Jersey, one of the Channel Islands
where he was born on October 9, 1850
He came to Australia with his people
in the sailing ship Golden City, and ar
rived in Brisbane on February 28, 1863.
The family settled on the Logan River
where they became associated with the
late "Bobby" Towns. Mr. Hodel came
north in 1870 and, landing at Towns
ville on March 17 of that year, had lived
here since.

The Nortlisrn Standard-wim sold on Wednes
day last by public auction, to Mr. Joseph
Hodel of this town, for the sum of £1000. The
paper will be run by Messrs. Frank and
Frederick Hodel, late of the Palmer Chronicle.

Northern Standard.— We are in receipt
of the first number of the now Daily Northern
Standard, published at Townsville. The
number promises well, and is a great advance
on what the old Northern papers used to be
We believe the Hodell's hiail from the Logan,
having gone up with Captain Towns when
that gentleman started cotton growing at
Townsville, in 1864. We wish our con
temporary every success.
