In the Liverpool city directories, he is still listed as a gunmaker in 1865-1868, so it would appear he survived in business for a while following the war.

Thanks Geoff. I knew that Joseph moved in 1865 and 1868, but I figured it had something to do with his misfortune over the trade with the CSA. Either he had to downsize his gunmaking business or it is just a coincidence. His son said that Joseph had a trunk full of Confederate paper money.

Joseph Allport, born Birmingham about 1817, gunsmith, was in Ireland on January 21, 1841, when he married Catherine Hewitt, born Cork about 1819. They were my great-greatgrandparents. Joseph's father and grandfather before him were gunmakers in Birmingham.
It seems likely that they left Ireland at the time of the potato famine. I've looked for the street where Joseph and Catherine later lived in Liverpool, but the Victorian properties have been demolished.
There has been extensive research by family historians into the Allport family.
