Dr P. ALLPORT
Dr. Percy Allport died at Otjiwarongo, S-W.A., on Sept 30 last. (1932) He qualified in 1882, taking the M.D., C.M., Royal University, Ireland. He came to the Transvaal in 1887 and practiced at Zeerust, Balfour and Heidelberg. He was gazetted Temporary Captain in the S.A.M.C. in the Great War, and after leaving the service he practised in Johannesberg for some time. He then went to South-West Africa and practised at Luderitzbucht and Gibeon. At the time of his death he was living at Arcadia, in the district of Otjiwarongo
He was D.S. at Zeerust and Heidelberg in the days of the Republic, and saw war service as Commando Medical Officer during the war against Magato. At the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War he was acting as superintendent of the hospital in Volksrust, and was appointed by the late Mr Ewald Esselen to an important post on the Field Ambulance. At Ladysmith he was chief command of the Boer ambulances after the death of his colleague, Dr. Holtz. Allport remained in the field with his ambulance which was the only one on the Boer side after the guerilla warfare became general, until the surrender at Vereeniging.
Allport was a man of strong character and feelings, bluff in expression and utterly sincere in his behaviour. He had a wide circle of friends, and was well known throughout the Transvaal. Since his retirement he lived quietly on his South West farm, and took no interest in professional matters.

Subject: Re: [Allport] Good to hear from you again.

I don't suppose anyone knows of a Percy Allport who emigrated to South
Africa from England or Ireland at the end of the 19th Century. Apparently he
studied at The Royal University in Ireland and became a doctor at a very
early age.

Reply - Thanks for the information. I have come to a complete halt with my Great Grand father,
Percy Allport and wonder if his life before going to South Africa in 1882 has been a bit covered up.
Could a person become a doctor at the age of 22 in those days?
Supposed to be born in Cork, 1860, have not been able to find him there.
Attended the Royal University of Ireland 1882...Their records only available from 1888 onwards.
So if anyone has ideas of where I should look next, would very much appreciate any advice.
