HENRY BRABY - ENGINEER AND INVENTOR Allan Brabyadded this on 30 Apr 2011 Employed as a Consulting Engineer with CSR Mill Pioneer and other North Queensland sugar mills including Mackay and Rockhampton from 1870 onwards during which time he invented, patented and installed mill crushing equipment. He is also credited with inventing and using the first 'octopus system of spears' for accessing underground water in the Burdekin delta area in 1885. Rootsweb Posting: Braby Family in Australia « on: Monday 30 August 04 11:56 BST (UK) » Hi, There are quite a few Braby's in Oz, some are descended from 3 brothers who came from London in the mid 19th century. these include Henry (b1849?) who emigrated in 1866, and settled in Townsville and Ayr in Northern Queensland, and was an Engineer with the Colonial Suger Refinery, Then there was Martin (1853-1931) who also lived in North Qld. and was a farmer, Then there was Frederick Luff (1855-1928), my Great-Grandfather. Not sure when he emigrated, possible when he was a very young man. He had about 12 children, two wifes, and lots of descendants, who are trying to pick up the threads of the past! They were all sons of James Braby, who was an inland revenue collector of Lamb Lane, Hackney. James was married to Caroline Luff in 1842 in Kirdford, Sussex. James was the son of James and Sarah (nee Carpenter) Braby who were also married in Kirdford, in 1799. Not sure but this James may have been also the son of John Braby and Ann Pollard who were married in Wisborough Green, Sussex, in 1777. (Both Wisborough and Kirdford are near Billinghurst, and very pretty little localities these days). What I would be interested in is if any other descendants of the Sussex Brabys in England or Australia wish to exchange information, and may be able to flesh out the Braby family in England. Also was there a family link to Frederick Braby of Bristol and Glasgow who were steel merchants in the late 19th century up to the 1960's (there is still a Braby Group listed as rainwater goods manufacturers)? |

Sad Death. A sad death, occurred in the Private Hos pital on Thursday last, when Mr. Henry Braby, brother of Mr. F. L. Braby, of Kyogle, joined the great majority, the im mediate, cause of death - being pernicious anaemia. The deceased was a stranger to these parts, having arrived here some three weeks since, thinking the change might re sult in improved health.-However, from the day of his arrival his condition gradually became worse, and despite the efforts of Dr. Greer and the nursing staff of the Hospital the sufferer sank into the deep slumber of death. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, the Anglican burial service being read by the Rev. A. R. Pegler. The obsequies were attended to by Mr. G. J. Grove. The late Mr. Braby, who was 58 years of age, was an Englishman by birth, and had been a resident of Northern Queens land for a number of years, where he fol lowed the calling of Consulting Engineer. In connection with his profession he had patented several inventions, one of which necessitated a trip to Glasgow, where he secured a first prize for Australian work manship in the engineering section of the Glasgow Exhibition of 1901. At the time of his death he was engaged in completing a new process for treating refractory ores.— ' Kyogle Exauiinor.' - ' |
