CHARTERS TOWERS NEWS
A girl named Mary Gelling, 7 years of age, was
burned to death this morning.

Northern Miner (Charters Towers) 19 June 1900
A very sad burning accident, resulting
in the death of a little girl named Mary
Ann Gelling, seven years of age, a
daughter of the late John Gelling, occur
red on Sunday evening. The child resid
ed with her mother and stepfather, Mr H.
H. Braby, proprietor of a line of New
Queen and St. Patrick buses, near the
New Queen mine, and at about 9 o'clock
on Sunday evening, while she and some
younger children were going to bed, her
clothes caught fire from a candle. With
her clothes ablaze the child rushed
screaming out of the house, and although
Mr and Mrs Braby were both at home, it
was naturally impossible to extinguish
the blazing clothing immediately, the
consequence being that the child was
terribly burned over most of her limbs
and body. Dr lister was at once sum
moned, but the case was a hopeless one,
and the child expired within about 15
minutes after the accident occurred, the
ultimate cause of death, as usual in such
cases, being shock to the system conse
quent upon the burning. The funeral
took place on Monday afternoon.

North Queensland Register (Townsville) 15 May 1901
A FATAL ACCIDENT.
A sad accident with a fatal termi
nation occurred on Saturday afternoon,
in which a boy named John Thomas
Gelling, and aged 14 years, met his
death.
It appears that the lad was employed
as a milk cart driver by Mr Herbert
Carvolth, whose dairy is situated on
Pinnacle Greek, about seven miles
from Charters Towers. Mr Carvolth
at about 12.30 sent the boy with
the cart to Messers Gill and Massam's
slaughter yards, a distance of about
three miles, the road being a bush
track.
The boy arrived at the slaughter
yards and fulfilled his errand in ob
taining some cows feet, and on the
return journey took one of the by
tracks, which are numerous in the
locality, and while driving along, the
off wheel of the vehicle struck a stump
somewhat over a foot in height,
which was partly concealed by a
growth of grass and some stunted
bush.
This occurred, it is surmised, be
tween 3 and 4 o'clock in the after
noon, but as there was no eye-wit-
ness of the occurrence, the track of the
cart is the only evidence of the cir
cumstances of the accident.
The wheel striking the stump had
caused the cart to completely cap
size, the boy failing to get clear, his
body being partly imprisoned in the
body of the vehicle.
The neighborhood is very lonely,
and the track not greatly used, con
sequently nothing was known of the
accident until a Mrs S. J. Weeks, the
wife of a teamster, residing at the
Broughton, was driving into town,
having travelled by way of the Black
Jack. She was driving at about 4
o'clock along another road, but seeing
the cart a little distance away, drove
over, and found only the head and
neck clear of the body of the cart.
The boy being quite dead, though the
warmth of the body showed that death
had not long taken place.
The little fellow's chin was resting
face downwards on the felloe of the
wheel, while the guard rail had pin
ned him down, the weight resting on
the back of his neck. The shafts of
the cart were unbroken, but the horse
was lying down evidently injured, and
some of the harness had been torn
apart.
Mrs Weeks, unable to release the
body unaided, drove over to Mr John
Gurley's selection, which is in the
Thomas Carse, immediately went over
to the scene of the accident and re
moved the body.
Meanwhile Mrs Weeks continued her
journey into town and reported the
matter to the police. Senior-Sergeant
Green, and Constables Noakes and
Cleary at once went out and ascer
tained the facts in connection with
the accident and brought the body
into the morgue.
The Government Medical Officer
(Dr. Forrest) held an examination,
but could not state exactly
the actual cause of death, but said
that there are no suspicious circum
stances. and the P.M. (Mr Eglinton)
gave the necessary order for the
burial, which took place on Sunday, a
large number of sympathisers attend
ing the ceremony.
The boy's mother resides on the
Pyrites Road with her husband, Mr
Henry Braby, the lad's stepfather.
