THE LATE MR JOSEPH GOODE FATHER OF CASTLEMAINES STATIONMASTER.
USEFUL LIFE CLOSES.
On the 30th June last was announced in the "Mail" the death of Mr. Joseph Goode, father of Mr. J. P. Goode the stationmaster at Castlemaine. Mr. Joseph Goode had led an active and useful life, and some fuller particulars of his career will, no doubt provide interesting to those many residents of Castlemaine who have the pleasure of acquaintanceship with his son.
Born in South Wales, the deceased gentleman arrived in Victoria in 1846. As he was then about 21 years of age; he can be genuinely called one of the earliest of the pioneers of this State. As happened with all young men when the mining excitement took such a hold on the country, he became a digger and his search after the precious metal resulting favorably, he afterward, engaged in the pursuit of a store keeper and buyer of gold.
He entered the Public Service in 1861 and he proved his worth so well that in 188?. he was apointed Deputy Registry General, and Assistant Registrar of Titles.
Throughout all his life the late Mr. Goode took a considerable interest in the Temperance movement. He was an active worker for the cause for over 25 years, for seven of which he was District Secretary of the Independent Order of Rechabites. He would receive no remuneration for this was of love, and that it entailed much labor and took up much of his time, can be gauged from the fact that his successor to the office received a salary of £300 per year. But Mr. Goode public work did not stop here, for he was an active member of several Building Societies, and for 15 years served on the Committee of Management of the Victorian Permanent Building Society.
He retired from the Government service 28 years ago, on a pension, ?? when he died, on the 28th of last June had reached the very ripe age of 8? years and seven months.
He is survived by a widow and four sons and three daughters.

The Age (Melbourne) 17 June 1935
Another link with the early days of the Victorian railways has been severed by the death of Mr. Joseph Pym Goode, George-street, Hartwell, which occurred on Friday. Mr. Goode, who was 81 years old, joined the railway service 64 years ago, starting as a telegraph oper ator at Spencer-street station, and was one of the first telegraph operators em ployed there. He became a station master about 1880, his first charge being Bealiba. In turn he was station mas ter at Werrlbee, Numurkah, Oakleigh, Serviceton, Warrnambool, Dimboola, Warragul, Kyneton and Castlemaine. He was well known throughout the State by the general travelling public. Mr. Goode retired from the railways when 59 years of age, and, though he lived to the fine old age of 81, the reason for his retirement twenty odd years ago was ill health. Mr. Pym Goode, senior officer in the office of the General Superintendent of Transportation of the Railway department, is a son. The late Mr. Goode's father was, in the early days, Deputy Registrar-General of Victoria. The remains were cremated at the Fawkner Crematorium on Saturday; there being a representative gathering, including many Masonic brethren and representatives of the Railway department.
