Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre Name/Title Joseph HANN, b. 1815 ENGLAND, d. 3rd January 1864, Burdekin River (near Burdekin Downs Station) QLD About this object Joseph Hann, his wife Elizabeth and five children William 14, James 12, John 10, Caroline 8, and Frank 6 years, emigrated from Donhead St Andrew's, Wiltshire in 1851 and settled in the Western Port District in Victoria. When the North Kennedy District on the Burdekin River in North Queensland was declared open for selection in 1959 Joseph decided to inspect the area. He with two sons William and John sailed from Port Phillip on 30th November 1861. At Brisbane and Sydney he bought some horses and a wagon. They disembarked at Rockhampton and travelled overland to Bowen where he decided to leave the wagon and acquired some pack saddles. At Bowen he was informed that most of the country along the Burdekin River had been taken up. When they reached the lower Burdekin the river was in flood and they suffered considerable difficulties rafting their equipment and swimming their horses across. They followed the river up to the junction of the Clarke River. They then followed this river for two days and discovered the beautiful Mary Vale Creek Valley surrounded by basalt tablelands. They crossed the tableland to the Basalt River where they found more good country. They returned to Bowen where they applied for and were eventually granted leases of about 600 square miles on each watercourse. These blocks became known as `Mary Vale' and `Red Bluff' (later `Bluff Downs') Stations. During their return journey to Melbourne they inspected and made tentative offers for cattle on properties west and south west of Rockhampton. They left Rockhampton at the end of May for Victoria where they made arrangements to move to North Queensland. The men left Melbourne on July 24th 1862 with the intention of buying stock north of Brisbane and arranged for the rest of the family to overtake them near Rockhampton where they arrived 6th November 1862. From there Joseph left all four sons with the cattle. He took his wife and daughter by boat to Bowen where they arrived on 28th November 1862, and were invited to a Mrs Powell's house. Joseph erected a tent close by where the women remained while he went to meet the cattle. From there they moved with the cattle, were held up on the Burdekin River for some time, but eventually reached `Red Bluff' Station on 26th February 1863. From that date Joseph gave much of his attention to the development and management of the properties but continued to buy stock whenever they were available. In August he sent William south in an endeavour to buy good young sheep but first William was to go to Melbourne to bring back his wife and young daughter. While William was absent on this mission Joseph was drowned in the flooded Burdekin River near `Burdekin Downs' Station. His body was never recovered.
