3 April, 1880 (aged ~ 38)
Townsville, Queensland, Australia

Telegraph (Brisbane) 5 April 1880
SUICIDE.
A TELEGRAM from Townsville, dated Saturday,
informs us that a Mrs. Cunningham committed
suicide that morning by hanging herself with
a saddle strap, at the residence of Mrs. Aplin
near the town. The deceased woman had
been suffering from melancholy and had been
watched by Mrs. Aplin during the early part
of the night, while her husband kept watch,
during the second part. The latter, however,
fell asleep and his wife took advantage of this
to commit the dreadful deed. On awakening
the husband found his wife gone, and on making
search was horrified to discover her hanging as
already described.

Sudden Death.
A MOST painful and distressing circum-
stance took place on Saturday morning
last. It appears that Mrs. Cunning-
ham, the wife of Mr. Edward Cunning-
ham, of Woodhouse station, has recently
been staying at Mr. William Aplin's
residence at Mundingburrah, and has
been in ill-health for some time past.
During the early morning of Saturday,
the lady must have left her bedroom
and proceeded to the bath-room, where
she was discovered in a lifeless state by
her husband. It is supposed that while
suffering from some derangement of the
mind she must have suspended herself
in the bath-room and that death ensued
therefrom. Dr. Frost was at once sent
for and immediately repaired to Mr.
Aplin's residence, but was not in time
to be of any service as life was extinct.
The funeral, which was largely attended,
took place on Saturday afternoon, the
Rev H. Plume officiating.

A correspondent at Ayr sends us the
following:-Edward Cunningham, son of
the owner of Woodhouse and other cattle
stations, was found dead on Thursday. It is
thought that the young man came by his
death through an accident, as he was found
lying with a gun by his side. On examina
tion it was found that the shot had gone
through the eye, and that death must have
been instantaneous. The police were com
municated with, and the body brought into
Ayr by them for burial. One strange feature
in the matter is that two blackboys saw the
body on Tuesday, but did not make the
matter known till Thursday. Mr Howard
Haywood, the well-known traveller and
lecturer, has been on a visit to Ayr and sur
rounding districts: he did not, however,
visit the sugar plantations, having already
visited many in other parts of the colony.
