Note 1: Burial info Cairns Post 1 March 1939 OBITUARY. MR. R. J. ATKINSON. MT. GARNET, March 1. Mr. Robert James Atkinson, owner of Cashmere Station, on the upper Herbert River, near Mt. Garnet, died at the homestead shortly before 1 o'clock this morning. He had suffered a long and painful illness; necessitating last year an operation in Sydney from which he had recovered just sufficiently to be brought home to Cashmere. Mr. Atkinson, who was 72, was the second, son of the Mr. James Atkinson, a pioneer station owner, who took up grazing land at Elizabeth Creek, in the Mt Surprise district, where deceased was born, being the first white child in that district. A kindly gentleman, and first-class cattle and horse man, he was very highly respected throughout the North. He leaves a widow and a grown up family-- Mrs. A. J. Champneys (Glen Harding Station), Mr. R. L. Atkinson (Glen Ruth Station), Mr. K. J. Atkinson (Wairuna Station) and Miss Joyce Atkinson (Cashmere). The funeral will probably be held at Cashmere Station early this afternoon. Mr. H. J. Atkinson, of Greenvale Station, died a few years ago, and Mr. T. J. Atkinson, of Gunnawarra. Station, died in 1930. Deceased was the last member of his generation in the Atkinson family. Cairns Post 4 March 1939 MR. R. J. ATKINSON. REVIEW OF HIS LIFE. GENTLEMAN PASTORALIST. MT. GARNET, March 3. It is with deep regret and a strong feeling of personal loss that the pass- ing of Mr. Robert James Atkinson, of Cashmere Station, early on, Wed- nesday morning at the age of 72, is recorded. A kindly man with a keen sense of humour and readiness to do a good turn at any time, he was well liked and respected throughout the north. With his exceptionally wide know- ledge and experience, gained by a life- time among cattle and horses, he had built up probably the finest herd of beef cattle and stud of thoroughbred and draught horses in North Queens- land. Born of pioneering pastoralists, James and Kate Atkinson, he was the first white child born at Elizabeth Creek, near where the township of Mt. Surprise now stands. He soon came to the fore as an outstanding horse master and a daring rider. Leaving the Mt Surprise district, he came to his father's property Wairuna Sta- ion, on the Upper Burdekin, where, with his brothers (the late Mr. H. J. Atkinson, of Greenvale Station, and the late Mr. T. J. Atkinson, of Gun- nawarra Station, who both prede- ceased him by some years) he gained further experience among stock. Later he purchased Abergowrie Station on the, the Lower Herbert, married Miss Lamont, of Melbourne, and settled down there for some years. Early in this century he purchased Cashmere Station, on the Upper Herbert River, and with his wife and young family commenced on the great task of mak- ing it the beautiful home it is to-day. Cashmere homestead is picturesquely situated on a high basalt tableland above the bank of the Herbert. In the time he could spare from his many duties on this big station Mr. Atkin- son, who was an ardent gardener, '' built up the famous terrace garden with basalt, -which was lying loose on the tableland. From annual visits to the Sydney Royal Show, where he pur- chased the best pedigreed animals most suitable for the north, he gradu- ally built up the station stock until the Cashmere thoroughbred and Clydesdale horses bearing the well known 9WD brands are recognised as possibly the best in the north. By the judicious mating of pedigree Devon and Shorthorn cattle, also purchased at the Sydney Show sales, he produced a strain, the stock from which are eagerly sought by cattle buyers. A fine upstanding man, nearly 6 ft in height, in his youth he excelled in athletics, and was noted for his swimming ability. Many tales are told by old hands of his daring feats. One of them was the swimming of the Herbert River in flood with a 50lb bag of flour balanced on his head. This was not a stunt but was repeat edly done in the wet season part of the day's work. He treated his many employees, as he did his guests in his hospitable home - with the greatest consider- tion. Besides his widow and family Messrs R. L. ("Montv") and K. J Atkinson. Mrs. A. J Champneys, Miss Joyce Atkinson - a number of em ployees who have spent their life or a large portion of it in his service, are left to mourn the loss of this fine gentleman. In the peaceful little cemetery, within view of his home at Cashmere, amid the surroundings he loved so well, he was laid to rest.

Note 2: Burial info Daily Mercury (Mackay) 20 Oct 1949 The death occurred at "Mun- galla," Ingham, of Mrs. Con stance Atkinson, formerly . of Cashmere Station, .widow of the late R. L. Atkinson, and mother of Mr. R. L. (Monty) Atkinson, of "Mungalla," on Sunday last. She was 86 years of age, and was residing with her son. The re mains were conveyed from Ing ham to Cashmere Station, where they were interred beside those of her late husband.
