The deceased gentleman came to Queensland in 1861 and has been one of the successful pioneers of the North. He leaves a wido w and one daughter and three sons. Brisbane Courier 29 Aug 1899 realty and personality, £8000 James Atkinson, formerly of Abergowrie station, near Cardwell, but lately of Wairuna, near ingham, grazier, to (Henry John Atkinson. Wairuna, near Ingham, grazier, and W. McDowell, Green -vale, near Charters Towers, grazier ; es- tate sworn under £1830.

ATKINSON.- On the 14th March, at Gunnawarra Station, Mt. Garnet, N. Queensland, Kate Atkin- son, relict of the late James Atkinson, of Port Fairy, and Wairuna Station, North Queensland, in her 93rd year. Northern Herald (Cairns) 6 April 1917 A correspondent writes: The death of Mrs. Kate Atkinson, relict of the late James Atkinson, occurred at Gun nawarra Station, Mt Garnet, on 14th March, in her 93rd year. The deceased lady was one of the oldest pioneers of North Queensland, arriving at Bowen with her husband in the early sixties. Going inland on the outlook for sheep country, their first stop was on the Burdekin the present site of Green vale Station, where they remained a year or so and then moved on and formed Mt Surprise with the late Mr. Firth. Finding sheep a failure they left in 1871 for the Lower Herbert, where Ingham now is. Shortly after arriving there the place was stuck up by a number of wild blacks when the men were absent, but the late Mrs. Atkinson kept them pacified, doling out stores till help came. In '81 they sold out to the C.S.R. Company and purchased Wairuna Station, where the late 'Mr. Atkinson died. The de ceased lady was also an old Vlictorian Colonist, having arrived in Victoria about the year 1850, where she lived with her brother, the late Mr. John Good, of Ingimira Station,Western District, and used to relate many thriling stories of the great fire, known as Black Thursday.

Note 3: Burial info Obit The grim reaper, whose visits to our town and district have been so frequent during the last few months, has again called. Deep regret and wide-felt sympathy will be felt and expressed wherever cattlemen foregather, at the death of Mr. T. J. [Thomas Joseph] Atkinson of Gunnawarra. Although his health had been precarious for a long time, alternately causing hope and depression it was an accident that really caused his death—one of those risks which cattlemen take quite often in the course of their work. Mr. Atkinson was struck by a beast which necessitated an operation. This severe trial coming on top of a system weakened by long illness was too much. The late T. J. Atkinson was one of three brothers, all noted cattle and horse breeders. When he came to Gunnawarra twenty-six years ago he found it much as nature had left it. He leaves it probably one of the best in Queensland. Its up to date water schemes and handy subdivisions, involving monumental labour, were all the creation of T. J. Atkinson. Many a young man beginning life amongst stock has reason to thank T. J. Atkinson for whatever success he met with. He belonged to a type, though fast disappearing, who have left their mark indelibly stamped on one of Australia’s greatest industries.
