MR. THOMAS ROCHE.
By the unexpected passing of Mr.
Thomas Roche at an early hour on
Thursday morning, Mackay and dis
trict has lost another of its pioneers.
At first the late Mr. Roche was not
disposed to regard his state of health
as being serious but when medical
assistance was called it was found that
he was in very bad condition. His
daughter, Mrs. R. H Jarrett, nursed
him assiduously after hearing the
doctor's verdict, but despite every care
he sank gradually to a peaceful end
within a few days.
Born at Aldershot, England, he had
passed his 80th birthday. In early boy
hood he resided with relatives in Bally
Landers, County Limerick, Ireland,
and left for Australia as a lad of 16
years, landing in Rockhampton,
Coming on to Mackay a few years
later he followed various occupations
in the sugar industry.
In the early days, he transported
machinery for the former Homebush
sugar mill, and later, after his mar
riage, in 1886, he took up a cane farm
at Marian, which he carried on for
nearly a quarter of a century. He
was one of the outstanding personal
ities in the sugar industry and was
one of the chief promoters of the
Marian mill, of which he subsequently
became chairman of directors, a posi-
tion he occupied in 1906-07 and 1908,
He continued on the board for many
years. He took over the license of Tat-
tersall's (now the Hotel Ambassador)
just prior to the last war. In 1916 he
relinquished the hotel business and
returned to cane growing once again
at Owens Creek. He was one of the
principal promoters of a railway to
that centre. His son, Harry, is still on
the farm at Owen's Creek.
He lost his right arm about 12 years
ago, but still carried on in the occu
pation which he liked best. He retired
about eight years ago.
Residing quietly in Gregory-street
he was a well-known figure in the city.
Besides his interests in the Marian
mill he was a shareholder in the
Mackay Meat and Bacon Association
He married Miss Catherine Murphy
who came from Lancashire to Mac-
kay 56 years ago. He leaves a family
of five sons and two daughters. They
are; Messrs. Thomas (Wandaru), Wil
liam (Mirani), Garry (Dalby), Cyril
(Silent Grove), and Harry Roche
(Owens Creek), Mesdames J. McGarry
(Macallster-street), and R. H. Jarrett,
residing at the home. One daughter.
Mrs. N. O'Neill, died about two years
ago. There are 15 grandchildren and
4 great grandchildren.
The funeral on Thursday was largely
attended by representative men of the
city and district. The services at St.
Patrick's Church and the graveside
were conducted by Monsignor Rowan
and Father Keneally respectively, The
pall-bearers were: Messrs. M. O'Neill
J. O'Neill, Kev Roche, C. Roche, Ken
Roche and Kev McGarry, grandsons
of deceased. There were numerous
wreaths and floral tributes and many
messages of condolence from friends
abroad. __
