At Wingham, on 26th May, 1886, by the Revd. S. P. Stewart,James William, eldest son of James Hodgins, of Farley, West Maitland, to Margaret, second daughter of David John Lobban, of Parkbaugh, Wingham, Manning River.

MANNING RIVER.
There has been a great deal of sickness and some
deaths in our midst this two weeks. An old and
respected resident of the Manning in the person of
Mr David Lobban, of Parkhaugh, The Bight, near
Wingham, passed away on Wednesday last at the
age of 60 years from inflammation of the lungs.
Mr. Tobban was a very old resident of The Bight,
having arrived here about 45 years ago with his
parents from tbe Paterson River, where he was
born. Mr. Lobban has left a widow, seven
daughters, and one son to mourn their loss. The
funeral, on Thursday afternoon, was attended by
fully 400 persons.

Mr. Lobban was 60 years of age. He
has been engaged in agricultural and
pastoral pursuits in the Manning dis
trict for many years, and successfully,
too, until the time of the great depres
sion that so materially affected property
holders, banks, and business generally.
Intelligent perseverance was bettering
the position when Mr. Lobban was
struck down by illness. He leaves a
widow and 8 children to mourn their
loss, besides many other relatives.
His brother, Mr. A. Lobban, Inspector
of Schools, for the Clarence River
District, is well known to many Man
ningites. A daughter of the late Mr.
D. J. Lobban is assistant teacher at
the Wingham Public School ; another
daughter is in the Telegraph Office,
another daughter is married to Mr. J.
W. Hodgins, Post and Telegraph Mas
ter at Wingham, and a third is
married to Mr. J. C. Duff, of Somer
set (Woodside). The family of Mr.
Lobban are connected by marriage
with several of the most respected
families in the district. The funeral
took place at the Bight Cemetery on
Thursday afternoon. There was a very
large attendance. The Revs. S, P.
Stewart and J. H. Terras were pre
sent. Mr. Terras read portion of
Scripture, and Mr. Stewart delivered
an address, After the offering of
prayer the benediction was pronounced,
and the remains of a worthy citizen
were consigned to their last resting
place.

OBITUARY.
DEATH OF MRS D. J. LOBBAN.
At one o'clock on Monday afternoon an
old resident, in the person of Mrs. D. J.
Lobban, of Parkhaugh, Wingham, was
released from a life of suffering by the cold
band of death. Since last Xmas she had been
indisposed, and for the last five months the
good lady was confined to her bed, the cause
of complaint being aneurism of the spine.
The best medical skill was provided, but the
disease irresistibly claimed its victim. For
about a fortnight the members of her family
have gathered round her bedside, knowing
that the sands of life were running nearly to
the end, and so it was that deceased had the
earthly comfort of having around her those
near and dear before she took that long,
long step into the Great Unknown.
Deceased was 68 years of age at the time
of her death. Born in Glasgow, Scotland,
she sailed for Australia with her parents
when 2 years of age, and some years after
landing in Australia they came to the Man-
ning, where she has resided for over half a
century. She (then Catherine Cameron), was
married by the Rev. A. McIntyre many
years ago at Marlee, to the late Mr. D. J.
Lobban (who died some years ago), and the
orphan family now numbers seven daughters
and one son, of the former three are married,
vis., Mrs. J. C. Duff and Mrs. G. A. Andrews,
of Woodside, and Mrs. J. W. Hodgins
(wife of Wingham's post and telegraph
master). The single daughters are the Misses
Bella, Kate, Jessie, and Mary, whilst Mr. D.
J. Lobban is the only son. Deceased also
had two of her own sisters and two brothers.
The former are Mrs. John Cameron, of Marlee,
and Mrs Angus Kennedy, of Beechwood,
and the brothers are Messrs. John and Donald
Cameron, of Marlee.
The late Mrs. Lobban lived an exemplary
Christian life, being a staunch adherent of
tbe old Free Presbyterian Church. Her
benevolence will live while her memory
remains green. She was quite prepared for
the end, which she knew must come, and
was a living illustration of Byron's concep-
tion when he wrote—
How sweet this very hour to die !
To soon from earth, and find all fears
Lost in thy light, eternity !
Her death, as we said before, came to her as
a welcome release from a life of pain, but
under any circumstances her bereaved family
have the sincerest sympathy of all who knew
the kind-hearted, highly-respected, and be-
loved one who is gone. The funeral took
place yesterday afternoon at the Bight Ceme-
tery, the Revs. S. P. Stewart and J. H.
Terras officiating. The Rev. E. H. Wright
would also have been present had it not been
that a similarly sad duty called him to the
graveside of the late Thomas Hutchinson
Wynter.

Although not altogether unexpected, the news of
the death of Mr. J. W. Hodgins, post and telegraph
master at Wingham, which sad event occurred at
his residence at 5 o'clock on the 25th ultimo, cast
quite a gloom over the district. The deceased
gentleman was a native of the Hunter River dis
trict, being the eldest son of Mr. James Hodgins of
Farley, his two sisters— Mrs. Dallas, of
Farley, and Mrs. Moore, of Bishop's Bridge —
arrived at Wingham previous to his death. Although
a comparatively young man, being in his 47th year,
it was noticed a year or two ago that his health had
begun to fail, and last year Mr. Hodgins was under
the treatment of Dr.McCormick in Sydney for a few
week. Ho apparently regained his strength, but on
his return to Wingham, tho wasting illness again
attacked him, and despite every attention by Drs.
Kelly and Gormley, the sufferer became more
-enfeebled, and passed away as stated, the cause of
death being pernicious anaemia. The late Mr.
Hodgins when quite a young man was appointed to
the charge of the Wingham Post Office, and for over
30 years maintained that position with credit to him
self and the Department, and with satisfaction to
the public. He was looked upon by the Postal De
partment as one of its most efficient and trust
worthy officers. He also held the pos
itions of electoral registrar and returning
officer for the Wingham district. He took an active
interest in all matters for the welfare of the public,
having for many years acted as treasurer to the
Upper Manning A. and H. Association, whilst in
sporting circles, especially on the cricket field,
his familiar figure, will be greatly missed. Mr.
Hodgins was always courteous and obliging
in the discharge of his official duties. The
sympathy of the district is extended to Mrs
Hodgins and her young family in her trouble. Mr.
Clyde Hodgins, the oldest, is employed with Messrs.
Farmer and Co., Sydney, but the other members of
the family (Thomas, Lobban, Dallas, and James) re
side at home. The remains were interred in the
Wingham Cemetery in the presence of an unusually
large concourse of people. At the graveside the
Rev. S. P, Stowart read tbe burial service, and
delivered a very impreasive address. Tho Revs. E.
H. Wright, and J. H. Terras also assisted. The
coffin and hearse wore literally covered with floral
tributes sent by sympathising friends. — ' Manning
