illness

Townsville Daily Bulletin 3 July 1946
Townsville lost one of its oldest
residents on Tuesday morning in the
death of Mr. John Brabon, at his
home at Harold Street, West End. Mr.
Brabon was 84 years of age. A native
of Ipswich he came to Townsville with
his parents at the age of nine. His
father became a carrier and he fol-
lowed in his footsteps, and carried
goods from Townsville over Hervey's
Range to various points in the north.
The late Mr. Brabon was credited
with hauling the biggest load up the
old Hervey's Range Road, three tons
of supplies for a hotel in Georgetown.
There was a bonus if the load could
be delivered in Georgetown in 28 days,
and Mr. Brabon collected it. He made
the trip in 26 days to the Etheridge
"capital." With the end of the team
days he secured employment at the
Stock Experiment Station, and later
at Hubert Wells, from which post he
retired about six years ago. The de-
ceased, who had a wide circle of
friends, is survived by his widow, one
son John (Black River) and two
daughters. Mrs. J. Collins and Miss
Beatrice Brabon. The funeral took
place on Tuesday afternoon.
