MAUDE
-DEATH- OF AN OLD RESIDENT
iIt is with deep regret that the death
has to be chronicled of one of the oldest
and most widely, known and esteemed
residents of the district, in the person of
Mrs. Biles, who died on the evening of
the 17th inst. The deceased, who was
in her 78th year, had resided in the one
resilience for nearly half a century, and.
her advice and services were freely avail
ed of by many of the sick of the district,
and she had until recently held the posi
tion of postmistress of Maude for a num
ber of years. It can safely be said that
she made all friends and ,no enemies,
The deceased, who was interred in the
Church of England portion of the Leth
ridge Cemetery, was borne to the grave
on; the shoulders of four of her grand
sons, and the pall-bearers' comprised
some of the oldest residents of the dis
trict.

A WIDOW'S BURDEN
Poor pretty and neatly attired children, named
respectively Thomas, Archibald, Sarah, and Ellen
Harrison, whose ages ranged from four to eight years,
were brought before the magistrates at the Police
Court yesterday, upon a formal charge of being ne-
glected children, their recently widowed mother, Mrs
Mary Anderson, being unable, through poverty and
ill-health, to support them. She informed the
bench that she lived in William-street, and
her husband had died about a month ago, leaving her
comparatively destitute, and too ill to work. If the
children were sent to the Industrial Schools her
father would be willing to pay a certain sum in order
to hare them boarded out to her. If the little ones
were permitted to live with her again, she would see
that they attended school and received ample educa
tion. Thomas Biles, father of Mrs Harrison, stated,
in reply to Mr Toohey, that he was a " small
farmer" living at Maude, and though nearly
eighty years of age, and not in very flou-
rishing circumstances, he would pay £1 per
month to the industrial school authorities, on. the
condition that the children were boarded out to their
mother. Mr Toohey informed the bench that the
old man's word was "as good as gold," as he had
known him for a number of years. The question was
then raised as to what would be done with the chil-
dren in the event of their grandfather dying before
they became old enough to support them
selves, it being explained that Mr Biles
could not leave them any property or money,
as he had a family of his own to make provi-
sion for. The difficulty was speedily solved by a
neighbor named Alfred Mattie, also a fanner, who
stated that, if through the death of their grandfather,
the children were deprived of support he would pay
£1 per month to the schools. Mr Heron remarked
that the offer was a very kind one. The children
were then committed to the Industrial Schools until
they each arrived at the age of 13 with a recommen
dation that they be boarded out to the mother as de-
sired.
