- Notes: Alexander Thorley Bolton (1847-1918), the younger by seven years, did survey work privately from about 1865 until 1870 when he became the first Borough Surveyor and Inspector of Nuisances. After a short time at Forbes, he established himself as a stock and station agent in Wagga Wagga in 1873 and remained until 1891. During this time he was an alderman for several years, served as Mayor of the town and was one of the Murrumbidgee representatives in the Legislative Assembly in 1885-6. He was a leader in the community and was outspoken but good-humoured at meetings as newspaper accounts indicate.

p155 The Fire Brigade held sports and processions; but it was a civic organization which rightly took itself seriously. When the first fire engine arrived late in 1880, ten years after the Borough Council mooted the organization, thirty of our brave and willing men'84 formed the Volunteer Fire Brigade under Captain A. T. Bolton. Both their willingness and their bravery were soon put to the test, because on 15 October 1880 one of the worst fires in the town's history destroyed several buildings in Fitzmaurice Street and threatened a number of others. The Brigade did its best but the stream of water, hand-pumped, was 'so small that it may be said to have been practically useless from the outset.' Until water was reticulated the engine was ineffective, but the organization was important as another outlet for the men of the town, who practised assiduously and performed creditably in contests througnout southern New South Wales and Victoria. It was, moreover, one of those levelling organizations where professional men and tradesmen worked together on a necessary task.
