Personal Notes:

Alwyn, the first surviving child of George and May Francis, was born at Ailsa Private Hospital in Kingaroy. He went to school at Kumbia Primary and Kingaroy High Schools, winning a scholarship when that was a prerequisite to a secondary education at State expense, and followed his father's love of the farming life.

In their seasons, cricket and tennis became his relaxation until war-clouds loomed ill 1936, when he and younger brother Les joined the Light Horse troop then being formed at Kumbia. In 1939, he and Les became joint owners ofan adjoining farm and took over on September 1 of that year, war being declared two days later.

By mid 1940 Alwyn had conunanded the Kumbia Troop for some twelve months. He then enlisted then in the AIF, with active service in the Middle East and New Guinea comprising the better part offour and a half years in uniform. During this time he and Joan were married in Melbourne and, before his discharge, their first child had arrived. In due course five more children were born, four surviving.

After the war, Alwyn purchased his Uncle William's farm at Kumbia and resumed his interest in community affairs, usually finding himself in an executive position - the RSL, the Memorial School ofArts, the School Committee and the Trustees of the Recreation Reserve receiving support. In Kingaroy, the Ambulance, the Anglican Parish Council, the Masonic Lodge (of which he was Master in 1958) occupied his attention. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1954. A superficial interest in politics resulted in nine years service on the Kingaroy Shire Council, three as Deputy Chairman.

Sport continued to be his relaxation, range rifle shooting taking the place of tennis and cricket. Alwyn represented Queensland in 1950, 51 and 52 and was Australian champion in 1951, winning the last Commonwealth Kings Prize at Perth in September of that year. Shooting gave way to lawn bowls in 1959. Alwyn has twice been Club Singles Champion and was Champion of Club Champions in 1978. Being President ofthe Kingaroy Bowls Club on two occasions and of the South Burnett Association in 1984 constitute his more important administrative contributions, being appointed a Life Member of/he Kingaroy Club in 1993.

On the farm front, he raised a useful herd of Poll Hereford cattle and was the first in the Kumbia area to introduce contour cultivation practices. Son Warwick returned home in 1977 to assist with the property and Alwyn moved to Kingaroy shortly after. In 1992, in the middle of a nasty drought, retirement beckoned and 'Aylesford' was sold. He and Laura were married shortly afterwards. Both still play bowls but on a less regular basis.
