Personal Notes:

Les, the second surviving son of George and May, was born in Esk, his mother having returned to the comforting nearness of her parents for the confinement. He received his education at Kumbia State School, and chose farming as his calling.

In 1936, with war appearing a probability, he joined his elder brother in becoming an inaugural member of the Kumbia Light Horse Troop towards the end of that year, and took part in their several camps before war finally broke out on 3rd September 1939. Two days before that fateful date, he, with his brother, had taken possession of a neighbouring farm and his life long occupation had begun.

As well, around this time, he met Joyce, his future wife and lifelong partner. She was then working in the township. Joyce is a grand-daughter of Mr James Missingham, an original selector in the district who, in his later life, was a well respected elder of the Methodist Church in Kumbia.

Les's sporting interests during this pre-war period were cricket and tennis. He was a very good exponent of both, as well as of rifle shooting as part of military training. After the war he again took up sport, and for a few years represented the District at cricket.

With the war situation worsening and his brother enlisting, Les managed the farm as best he could, as well as assisting his father on the adjoining property. He and Joyce were married in Bundaberg and lived on the farm until their eldest child and only son Graham married. They then moved to Kumbia. Sadly, their younger daughter, Dianne, contracted leukemia and died at the very young age of thirty-four years.

Les was regarded by all as a very competent and progressive farmer, and always placed necessary work before relaxation. With a capable son to take his place, he and Joyce moved to Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast in January 1981 and later on, in December 1997, moved to Pioneer Place, a retirement village at Southport. Les died in 1998 after suffering the same illness that had claimed his daughter.
