Personal Notes:
George Ibbotson was born 5 November 1834 at the corner of Castlereagh and Hunter Streets, Sydney.

His father, who conducted a small market garden and dairy, arrlved in Australia on 2 May 1818, and was later married in Sydney to Mary McAlister, a sister of Thomas McAlister, one of the first settlers in Tumut.

In 1839 when George Ibbotson was a very young child, he, his parents and their five daughters moved to Tumut by bullock dray. After three years the family returned to Sydney leaving Robert George Ibbotson, (his full name) who was then only eight years old, in the care of George Shelley for a short time. He was then taken and reared to manhood by his uncle, Thomas McAlister at Wereboldera. In 1853 his mother died from typhoid fever and his father died in 1857. As a result of these events George never saw his parents again after they left Tumut in 1842.

When he grew to manhood George Ibbotson became a carrier and was the first teamster ever to reach the top of the then dreaded Talbingo Mountain with a horse team.

The road was unmade and followed the steep mountain spur and in places, around dangerous sidings. For a number of years he carried merchandise from Tumut to the goldfields at Kiandra. He also drove bullock teams to Sydney carrying produce, returning to Tumut with stores.

George Ibbotson was a great lover of the mountain country and bush life. He supplied all the shingles for the churches in Tumut and for most of the substantial buildings.

His first wife, Ellen Ryan, died during the birth of their first child. This child, a daughter, Johanna Ibbotson, later married William Eurell.

In 1863 George married Lucy Annette Buckley, who was born in the Gilmore Valley in 1846.

In the latter years of his life, for health reasons George spent much of his time about the top of the Cumberland Mountain where he engaged in splitting palings. These loads he carted to Tumut with his familiar turnout drawn by a horse in the shafts and a bullock in the lead. He died in Tumut on 26 June 1926 at the age of 92 years.

Death of Mr. Robert George Ibbotson Mr. Robert George Ibbotson, Tumut's nonogenarian, did not long survive his life's partner after she was called away from his side. He passed away peacefully at his residence, Russell-street, on Saturday morning shortly after 6 o'clock. He attended the funeral of his late wife a fortnight previously and from then out he appeared to be listless to his surroundings after the hard blow he had received. Deceased had a remarkable career. Born on November 15, 1834, at the corner of Castlereagh and Hunter-sts, Sydney, his father then keeping a small market garden and a dairy. His father had come to this country on May 2, 1818, and married in Sydney Mary McAlister. The child George came to Tumut with his parents and five sisters in a bullock team in 1839. Business recalled the parents and daughters to Sydney, after three years' residence here, the son, the subject of this obituary, being left in the care of the late George Shelley, of Tumut Plains, and he never saw his parents afterwards, his father dying on Sept. 19, 1857, and his mother on June 22, 1853. Remaining with Mr. George Shelley for a while, he then went with his uncle, the late Thomas McAlister, who reared him to manhood, but there were then very poor opportunities for acquiring education. For many years he followed carrying pursuits, and was the first teamster to take a horse-team laden with merchandise to Kiandra gold rush, straight up Little Talbingo mountain. Those were the days of hardship and endurance. He was acknowledged as one of the finest bush men in the colonies, his bushcraft bringing him through the roughest and most rugged country of our mountain fastnesses, either on horseback or on foot, under most difficult situations. He also covered the roofs of the whole of the churches in the town with his own shingles, now given place to other materials, and fenced the first public school ground. He was twice married, his first wife dying when Mrs. William Eurell sr., of Tumut, their only child, was born on September 8, 1863. In 1867 Mr. Ibbotson married Miss Lucy Annette Buckley, the family being Mrs. A. Oddy, Arthur, Charles, Albert, Rowley, Herbert and Walter, all of whom survive. Mr. Ibbotson's family were all long-livers. One of his sisters, Mrs. Saunders, died at the age of 85, and was at the time of her death the oldest living resident of Botany Bay. The youngest of the family died on April 19, 1917, aged 83 years, and all the others attained more years than she. He led a quiet later life for many years in the old home which he had occupied for 52 years. Being one of most amiable disposition he made friends with whomsoever he came in contact. The funeral took place on Sunday, the sepulchre being the Church of England portion of the New Cemetery, alongside the remains of his dear departed wife. Rev. T. A. Gair performed the last sad rites and Messrs. Fuller and Burt attended to the burial duties. The coffin-bearers were Messrs Arthur, Albert, Rowley Ibbotson (sons), Edward G. Brown, W. Nuttall and Wm. Eurell.
